Very sad and where does time go.  The epitome of a true man and a power forward beast.  Opposing players used to stay away from his presence on the court and I never saw him smile when playing.  He was all business, very intimidating and could back it up.  He is now sitting next to AL on the heavenly bench.

RIP Luke and thanks for the memories.

Very sad. A great Warrior and great player.  Believe or not not I was cheering for MU wildly and was present when he hit the shot to beat UW 49-48.

RIP Mo. :-[

What?!

That sucks... I've always thought of Mo as one of the true greats. I know I never got to see him play but my uncle, who was on campus at the same time as Mo, told me he was the greatest Warrior he ever saw...

Wow...That really, really sucks. RIP Luke

Marquette great Maurice Lucas, the Enforcer - dead at 58

Written by: noreply@blogger.com (muwarrior92)

Maurice Lucas, one of the greatest Warriors ever to play basketball at Marquette University, died Sunday at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer.

Lucas played for Marquette in the early 1970's and helped Marquette to their first championship game appearance in 1974.  The Warriors lost to North Carolina State that year and left to play professionally in the ABA with the Spirits of St. Louis.

In 1977, he helped leat the Portland Trailblazers to the NBA championship by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers. In that series, Lucas role as enforcer was center stage for all to see as he and Darryl Dawkins were involved in a major bench clearing ball.  Lucas refused to back down to Dawkins or the Sixers, instilling the team with the courage needed to take home the title.

Bill Walton later stated that Maurice Lucas was the GREATEST PORTLAND TRAILBLAZER who ever lived.  He named his son, Luke Walton, after Lucas.

Lucas is remembered in many publications today

Maurice Lucas, one of the greatest Warriors ever to play basketball at Marquette University, died Sunday at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer.

Lucas played for Marquette for two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74, helping the Warriors to their first NCAA championship game appearance in 1974.  The Warriors lost to North Carolina State that year, and Lucas left to play professionally in the ABA with the Spirits of St. Louis.

In 1977, he helped lead the Portland Trailblazers to the NBA championship by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers. In that series, Lucas' role as enforcer was center stage for all to see, as he and Darryl Dawkins were involved in a major bench clearing ball.  Lucas refused to back down to Dawkins or the Sixers, instilling the team with the courage needed to take home the title.

Lucas was a four-time NBA All-Star and was named as one of the top 30 players in ABA history.  Bill Walton later stated that Maurice Lucas was the GREATEST PORTLAND TRAILBLAZER who ever lived.  He named his son, Luke Walton, after Lucas.

I was a freshmen the same year he was. He was in the last class that freshmen were not allowed to play. He was on the freshmen team when Chones jumped ship. There was some wishful thinking that the NCAA would allow him to replace Chones as it was already expected that freshmen would be allowed to play the next year. Two years later Ellis was a freshmen. I still can remember saying after the first game I saw Ellis play "I cannot believe it Ellis is better than Lucas". What a tandem junior Lucas and freshmen Ellis made. They lost in 1974 champioship game.

He was at MU three years. His freshmen year was the last year freshmen could not play, so he played on the freshmen team.

Yes, if Chones had stayed, it would have been Chones, Larry McNeil and Lucas and if McNeil hadn't jumped ship the next year, the front line of McNeil, Lucas and Ellis.  What could have been......

I loved watching Lucas play.  One of my favorite players.  It is always sad to see someone taken so early in life.  My prayers go out to his family.

I understand the sentiment, but their are many among us (I'm guessing) that think Maurice Lucas is the best "power" forward in MU history.

One of the best thing that Maurice did was to come back and get his degree with the support and pride of Hank Raymonds. One of the "GREAT WARRIOR"
