Hopefully you can make heads or tails of the list below.  It shows all the recruits that have a check mark next to "offer" regardless of level of interest or if they have already committed to another school (Like Brandon Dawson).  I included the committed because a year ago Vander was committed to Wisconsin ... until you sign you should be considered in play.

I know this is probably obvious, but the Deputy AD, Mike Broeker tweeted yesterday that Buzz and staff are busy prepping for a "month of visitors and visits" (@mikebroeker)

How many scholarships do we have opening up next year (assuming no early departures)?

This seems unusual. 23 offers?
Does anybody know what is normal in the crazy world of recruiting?

I would think that you focus on 8-10 players--not this many.

I am sure some of those offered have told Buzz "No thanks" or Buzz knows he may no longer have a chance with them.

Well, if you need to sign 3-4 players, and you only focus on 8-10, that would require a pretty unrealistic success rate. 20-25 seems about right to me.

This number seemed high to me as well, and I actually heard that we offered more scholarships than most schools. But I took a quick look at the other Big East schools and it looks like this is pretty typical for the majority of schools. In general, as the status of your program goes up, the number of offers/year goes down. For example UNC has offered 5 scholarships, 2 of them already committed to UNC.

Marquette has extended 23 offers, 6 of which have committed to other schools.

Other Big East Schools

Georgetown- 19, 5 committed to other schools
Depaul- 24 offers, 7 committed to other schools
UConn- 13 offers, 3 committed to other schools
Cincinnati- 29 offers, 6 committed to other schools
Louisville- 20 offers, 5 committed to other schools
Notre Dame- 16 offers, 8 committed to other schools
Pitt- 15 offers, 6 committed to other schools
Providence- 29 offers, 10 committed to other schools
Rutgers- 30 offers, 7 committed to other schools
Seton Hall- 21 offers, 4 committed to other schools
St. Johns- 24 offers, 5 committed to other schools
Syracuse- 12 offers, 4 committed to other schools
USF- 17 offers, 4 committed to other schools
Villanova- 15 offers, 6 committed to other schools
West Virginia- 29 offers, 10 committed to other schools

Thanks. Looks like other than the biggies like Duke and UNC, most everybody else is offering lots of times.

My guess is Ky. probably does not make lots of offers, because those bags of cash would probably be tough to come by other than several per year.

They must have "bought" this recruit also.  The incoming 2011 class for Kentucky is just crazy good.

They can load up on top 20 recruits as much as they want...they'll probably never win a title with this one-and-done recruiting approach.

I don't care how good these players are...if they don't stay together for more than a year they'll never be a good enough TEAM to win it all.

I disagree. They have enough talent to get hot. They UNDERACHIEVED last year and still go to the sweet 16. If they even get 1 or two of this class to stay an extra year, that should be enough to push them over the edge.

Agreed. Kentucky has only been going about it this way for 1 year, and as you said, they underachieved  by getting to the sweet 16. Nobody has ever strung classes like this back to back, so I think its a little premature to say this model is a failure. Give them a few years.

I think you and marty need to examine why you think they "underachieved" this past year?  Is this because with all that 18-19 year old talent they MUST have been good enough to go farther...after all, they had 4 freshman who were future NBA first round picks so they MUST have been good enough to win the NC, right?

Or is it because four 18-year old future first round picks (even with another multi-year NCAA player who was ANOTHER NBA first round pick) who have played together for all of 7-8 months don't necessarily make as good of a team as a group of 20-22 year old men who have played together as a team for multiple years?  All the talent in the world (which apparently is what they are trying to achieve) is probably not enough to go all the way without experience and team chemistry.

Look at the teams that have won NCs...KU in 2008 had some key players who were young...but most are pretty experienced groups that have played together for 2-3 years.

How I determine whether or not UK underachieved last year is how I always judge such issues, no matter the ages of the players. Going in to the tourney, they looked to most analysts to be at least an elite 8 team, with most thinking final four. They passed the eyeball test, had as good of a resume as any team going in to the tourney, and actually had great team chemistry. They may have been a bunch of kids, but they clearly loved playing together (evidence:see their celebration after Cousins' tip-in buzzer-beater in the SEC tourney)
Given all that, its no stretch of the imagination to say they underachieved in the tourney.

Its way too easy to let feelings about the Calipari/Kentucky way sour people on their title chances. Its only one year. And you really can't compare the way UK is operating right now to past teams that relied on one-and-dones. As I said, nobody has ever recruited on this level before (at least in my lifetime).

By the way, Syracuse won a title in 2003 with their two best players being freshmen. Its not impossible.

and by the way, yes, having an overwhelming amount of talent does factor into it. It takes talent to win.

Since we are doing some statistical analysis, the question I would have is, on average what percentage of those that are offered during the first recruiting period does a school typically gain a committment?  In other words, can we come to some sort of assumption that of this list of 23, MU will likely gain a committment from 1, 2, or 3 of these guys?

It's very low.  Someone looked at it a few years back and it was something like 10-15%.  And that was just looking at offers that the recruiting sites thought they could confirm, in reality the number was probably lower than that....so given that MU has 3 scholarships available, you can safely assume there are more offers out there than what Rivals has listed or knows about.

That statement alone is incredible. Of course, even with Duke I would take the field. Your basically saying that it is a reasonable argument to put Kentucky vs 64 other teams, or to say they are one of the main favorites. That's putting Kentucky in a very high regard as Elite. I thought they were Elite 8/Final 4 caliber team and they hit lower end expectations in the tourney. Like I said, if they can keep putting together classes like this and just get 1 or 2 holdovers, you are talking NCAA Championship. I think that is light years ahead of where we are right now.

I agree some programs like UNC and Duke will be better off getting 3-4 year guys, but Kentucky can't get those guys. Might as well promote the 1 and done and get a competitive advantage that way.

I don't think it's accurate to say Kentucky can't get the 3-4 year guys. It's just not their priority. Their "business plan" is to get the best players they can. Those would mostly be one and dones. If they miss on them, it's on to the 2 year player, then 3, then 4.

Fair enough, I just think Duke and UNC has the upper hand on the 5 star 3-4 year players. Why compete when you can get other top 10 guys? I see your point and I think Kentucky likes the reputation of a 1 and done school, but I think that is just their core competency for recruiting to set them apart.
