Do you think Geoge Mason should bring back their old mascot, Gunston, over the new Patriot?

Jay Bilas  (4:42 PM)

I am not familiar with Gunston, but if Gunston is anything like the Warrior at Marquette, then YES, they should bring it back. Marquette will always be the Warriors to me. And, I loved the untucked unis worn by Bo Ellis, Jerome Whitehead and Bernard Toone under Al McGuire. They were great.

Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

Those Unis were great. I recall that the Bumblebee unis were banned by the NCAA for their "hallucogenic" effect.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

The ironic thing is if they kept the Warrior name and simply changed the logo/mascot their would be far less Indian imagery than there is now.

thanooj

if only some wealthy alum would make an anonymous donation of 1 million plus on the condition of changing the name back to the WARRIORS and then many of the rest of wealthy alums would come through with sizeable donations to match the million on the same conditions.  Marquette University just couldn't say no to an offer like that.

A few million is like dumping a bucket of water into the ocean for Marquette.  MU does not have the endowment of some of the other private schools in this country, but a few million is not exactly going to work as a bribe for something that would get these kinds of headlines.  I remember they said that it would cost a few million just to change Golden Eagle to Warriors around campus and in MU athletic buildings.

yup.

and at this point, I don't think they'd change back for any amount of money.

I'm pretty sure thanooj was being sarcastic since something similar to his scenario played out a few years ago.

Really? Compared to many of its peers, Marquette's endowment is paltry.

Depends who you consider a peer.  MU's endowment is a fraction of Columbia, Notre Dame, and a lot of private schools on the coast.  But let's not put MU into the category of bending over for a few million dollars.  We are above that.

Our alums are also above having the money to donate to a worthwhile cause at MU, but having the nickname truly hold up that donation.  Alums might say that in passing that they are upset about the nickname change, but at the end of the day, most people don't truly hold up donations due to a nickname change.  At least not anymore if they did on a kneejerk right when it happened.  We are above that too.  MU is doing just fine in the donations department since the nickname change.

I assume you are referring to the stigma attached to totally caving in to the forces of political correctness rather than addressing the issue like logical adults.

bilsu

MU has never been on probation, but probably leads the NCAA in banned uniforms. Bumbebee uniforms were banned, because they were too distracting. The untucked uniforms worn by MU were actually designed by Bo Ellis. Untucked uniforms are now also banned.

100 percent correct. We hold the stigma of being completely pathetic as nobody in their right mind considers "Warriors" offensive. All we had to do was get rid of the mascot.

mikem91288

Golden State just has some yellow dude as their logo. Too bad we didn't steal that idea.

They dropped the robot man.  Too offensive to robot men.

Yeah I'm guessing when a robot wants something he gets his way.

Yup, because it was in 2004 at my MU graduation ceremony, the commencement speaker Wayne Sanders said he and another donor would both give $1 million. Of course, we all went nuts at the suggestion, and that led to Father Wild opening up the potential name change debate, the disastrous "Marquette Gold" nickname that stuck for about 2 weeks, and then the vote that allowed us to pick our nickname, which ultimately resulted in the return to Golden Eagles simply because Warriors was left off the ballot, and write-ins were not permitted.

My hope was we would go back to Warriors, but use something like this except with Blue and Gold:

Taken right from The Warriors movie. Then instead of having the Native American imagery, we instead use the classic soundtrack line from the movie...as the BC goes dark, you start to hear the sound of bottles clinking, then you hear the fateful "Warriors...come out to play-yay!" before the Marquette basketball team storms the court. Imagine the entire BC calling Marquette out with that creepy Warriors chant...you want to talk about creating an intimidating atmosphere for a visiting crowd, that would do it.

Of course, I really can't see a Catholic university embracing a nickname that was a play on a movie about violent street gangs, but one can dream, no?

I just got goosebumps thinking of that idea.  Especially with maybe a moment of silence after "play" and then breaking into some awesome intro song.  What a magnificent idea.

Dexter Riley wanted to sign on too, but his credentials were rejected.  The League of Robots continues to be very exclusionary for some reason...

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
