REALIGNMENT UPDATE: Big 12 Demands decision from 2
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:41:16 AM »
The Big 12 has demanded that Nebraska and Missouri state their intentions as to whether or not they intend to leave for the Big Televen by Friday. I think the Big East would be wise to do the same with Notre Dame. Seems like between the Midwest and West Coast pushing, we could see the Big 12 become the first major conference to take significant hits. Here's the ESPN link:

Why demand a commitment from those two schools when SIX other big 12 schools are rumored to be jumping to the Pac 10?

The rumor is that the Texas schools won't leave if there is a commitment from Nebraska and Missouri to stay.  If NU and Mizzou say they intend to leave, then Texas schools will as well.

Maybe the Big East instead of demanding a commitment from Notre Dame should tell the basketball only schools to start a football program or get out. The problem is not Notre Dame, it is the non-football schools.

Ummm . . . as far as the BE is concerned, ND doesn't have a football program.  So they should tell ND to join the BE for football or get out as well?

Sounds like an empty threat.  What are they going to do if Missouri and Nebraska don't give them a definite answer?  Kick them out and then see who can join a new conference first?

I would read it this way.  Texas doesn't want the Big 12 to change.  The conference has unbalanced revenue generation based upon local television, number of times on national television, etc.  Forcing Nebraska and Mizzou to stay committed to the Big 12 keeps the Big 12 around.  There are rumors that Texas is going to create its own cable network...outside of even A&M and Tech.  The revenue would be enormous and not have to be fully shared.  Texas won't be able to do that in the B10 or Pac 10.

I know people in the AD in Nebraska and Kansas who despise Texas.  They are the ones that wanted the unbalanced revenue schedule, and are pushing to keep it.  There are a lot of people at Nebraska who *want* the Big 12 to survive, but feel that it can no longer be viable under the current revenue structure.  However, the Big 10 hasn't yet formally invited Nebraska yet...but some are now saying that it is only a matter of time before the Big 10 starts to make some decisions.

Big 12 is trying to force Big ten and hand of Nebraska and of Missouri. IF Mizzou goes Big 12 may continue, but if Nebraska leaves, the Big 12 will bust, whether to Pac 10 , or parts elswhere.
Big key is still ND, as ND met today w/Big ten repr in Chicago. Included here is a simple possibility. ND ONLY joins B 10, and it goes to 12 teams (gets its champ game) and the frantic activity of all other conf slows, with this small big ten expansion.
Here is some of current report:....
"....As Orangebloods.com reported Saturday, nine schools were willing to commit to the Big 12's future last week in Kansas City, and three weren't - Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado.

Those three schools have been given a deadline of roughly June 15 to decide if they are staying in the Big 12 or willing to hold out for a possible berth to another league.

Missouri has rubbed some of its Big 12 colleagues the wrong way by appearing willing to crawl on broken glass to get to the Big Ten. The Tigers won't promise the Big 12 anything.

Colorado appears enamored with a Pac-10 invite. But CU won't get one unless Texas is with the Buffaloes.

And then there's Nebraska.

This deadline imposed by the Big 12 presidents and chancellors really pertains to Nebraska. According to sources, Nebraska has shown some willingness to reconsider what once appeared to be a pair of no-looking-back blinders toward the Big Ten.

The sense among the nine Big 12 presidents who are fighting to hold the league together is the conference could survive if Missouri left. But it couldn't survive if Mizzou and Nebraska both bolted.

That's why those schools have been put on a deadline of roughly June 15 to commit to the Big 12.

And as for the Big Ten...

An athletic director with knowledge of the Big Ten's plans said he's been told the Big Ten would shut down its expansion at one school if that one school was Notre Dame.

And contrary to reports, Notre Dame is still listening to the Big Ten about possibly joining that league, the athletic director said. Notre Dame's governing board is apparently split down the middle on the decision.

The AD said the Big Ten is focusing solely on Notre Dame right now before addressing Nebraska or Missouri.

The inference was clear, however: Nebraska had better be sure it has an invitation to the Big Ten by June 15 or it could risk being left out of the Big 12 and Big Ten with no power conference to land in.

yes one wonders  whether the simple question to ND was-- if you are on board, we will take you only, go to 12 and get our 2 divisions w/champ game....end of story ...for now

If Notre Dame left and UCF replaced them, we'd be getting a better football program than if Notre Dame joined the Big East full bore :D

Texas is sounding more and more like the Notre Dame of the Big 12.  Maybe Texas will want to take its football program independent, once they have their own TV contract.

While all this is primarily about income, its not completely about income.  Otherwise, the Big Ten says; 'Hey Northwestern thanks so much for helping us form the league over a hundred years ago, but..."
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

A friend of mine sent me this quote from some paper in Nebraska:

"Texas wants to pursue its own sports network. The Big 12 appears open to that. UT doesn’t want to equally share league revenue. The Big 12 doesn’t, either. The league offices are in Dallas. The Big 12 football championship is in Dallas. The league’s annual regular season game of the year - Texas vs. Oklahoma - is in Dallas. The Longhorns have a fiefdom in the Big 12. Their own private kingdom."
