Love all of this year's recruits and think they all bring alot to the table. But considering Vander and Jamail are our 2 Top 100 recruits, thought it would be interesting to get people's thoughts on who would leave MU as the more accomplished player?   List your "sleeper" pick out of the other recruits if you can comment.  My sleeper would be Reggie Smith.

I think Newbill has a chance to be a great player for us and a possible NBA player.

I was wondering how you were going to escape from the "MU #18 team of the past decade" thread.  Man, it was looking like the Alamo for you in there.

Oh, the poll.  I voted Vander.  I'm definitely in the minority which is interesting.  Jamail has game!  Bigger upsets than Newbill coming thru as the best have happened.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Based on what?

Based on the fact that he hasn't arrived on campus yet.  As soon as he does, it'll be crazy to think he could possibly contribute this year.

At least that's how it went last offseason.

LOL - Nice...the usual suspects were having their way with me..which is okay.  Difference of opinon makes debating fun, albeit frustrating at times for sure.  I too like Newbill from what i've seen as far as body, and the training video..seems to have a great work ethic.  Just think Reggie Smith could be a dynamo with that athleticism.

NBA could be a stretch but I too think Newbill has some special quality to his game where he'd be a sleeper recruit for us if he comes to Milwaukee -- which inches more likely by the day if our flirting keeps ending with walkaways.

... hopefully this Newbill prediction will work out better than last year's predictions that Ewill has an NBA body and would be playing 20 minutes a game his freshman season.

I voted for Blue based upon his interview with Brad Galli that was recently posted.  Seems he has the desire, and of course the skills, to really be a player.

The sleeper pick is Reggie Smith.  With the way Junior played last year (yes the injury), he didn't appear to be an offensive threat.  Smith is very quick and athletic and hopefully will be the backup point guard to start season.

Dr. Blackheart

Like Doc Rivers, Vander may have the better NBA career, but Jones may have the better collegiate span.

I saw Jamail play in that game on espnu earlier in the year and to say the least I was disappointed. I will say there was some other stars on the floor (fab). Hopefully he was just having an off game bc I haven't seen much on him other than that.

On the flip side, I saw him twice and was greatly impressed. The kid has a great body and excellent athleticism, to go along with good driving ability and a sweet looking shot from range. Seemed a bit lazy on defense, but I think Buzz will take care of that... He will likely want to play shooting guard because thats where he would best fit at the next level (just like vander mentions wanting to be a 1), but with MU's 3 guard type offense he can play the three and have a great career at MU.

I haven't seen Vander play, but from what I have heard smart money goes with him here. Could you imagine a backcourt with Vander at the 1, DJO at the 2, and Jamail at the 3? Oh yea that could be highly possible in 2 seasons, or even this year  ;D...If Crowder is productive and Otule improves, look out

State Street Warrior

I'm going with Vander due to all around game (from what I have heard).  I remember a lot of talk about Jones' great scoring and the difficulties about getting back in transition and D.  I hope he steps it up, which I'm sure he will before he gets to see any real minutes at MU.

Sleeper is a tough call, I'll take Newbill because of how he is working and getting ready for the season along with his size.  I think it will be interesting to track this class, the best player could be any of them. Gardner has the least depth in front of him so maybe more minutes if he earns them, and Crowder for two years could have a very nice career.

ErickJD08

Newbill is my sleeper... for this board to be speculating to transfer at this time next year.  Why?  He will barely play and Buzz will over commit.  Personally, I think none of the freshmen will be HUGE contributors next season.  I think all of our returning players will get the majority of the minutes (Otule, Junior, Butler, Fulce, EWill, DJO, Buycks).  And I would bet that Crowder gets more quality minutes than the freshmen.  And that's perfectly fine in my book.

Are we overhyping a youtube video of Newbill lifting weights?

I saw Jones play on ESPN and he has skills and looks like he can play in a system.  I love that he hits threes.  Vander just looks like an amazing athlete.  I hope that Buzz found another gem in Newbill, but Vander and Jones are clearly ahead of him now.  If you are saying Newbill will be good and I am glad we have him, then fine.  But Vander and Jones are our studs coming in as freshman.

Clearly we're overlooking one of the newcomers.....hard to believe considering how big he is.  IMO, Davante Gardner has the best chance to make an immediate impact based on our need for a true post presence.  Otule is again coming off injury and has yet to make any impact, and Fulce is essentially a role playing PF that plays at C by default.  I think this gives Gardner a great opportunity to step right in and establish a real presence on the court.

If you are right, we are going places.  However, I still expect Gardner to be dealing with weight, quickness, strength issues during his freshman year.  If he can shape up to the point where he can have an impact, it is great news.  I suspect that he will struggle on defense and it will take time for him to adapt to Buzz's system and the pace of the college game.  Therefore, playing time will in all likelyhood be limited.

GoldenWarrior

I voted Vander for this poll.  I just see more overall potential and his ceiling being further away than Jamail's personally.

As for the sleeper... can I vote Junior Cadougan?  I obviously know he isn't a frosh and such, but given how limited he was last year with the injury and everything, I really think that kid is going to get a chance to shine coming up.

Nukem2

I suspect its a tie at this point.  Both Vander and Jamail have lots of talent and good body size.  Lots of love here for Newbill, but don't think he'll be better than these two.  No knock on DJ, but he is more of a Joe Chapman type player who will nevertheless contribute significantly.  DJ is not in the same league athletically with Vander and Jamail.

GoldenWarrior

I don't think all the DJ Newbill talk in here necessarily means that the people think he'll be better than Vander or Jamail, but is simply their sleeper pick as in someone who will come in and contribute more than expected and perform better than anticipated currently during their time at MU.

So Blue, Jones, Crowder, Smith and Gardner arent working hard as well?

We know very little about Newbill, compared to what we know about the other guys. I think most of the guard minutes next year go to Cadougan, DJO, Buycks and Blue...not sure when Newbill breaks into the rotation.
