MU Avenue

Anyone here can reply to any post as he or she wishes.

But in the interest of clarity, I must point out that most who have replied to my original post seem to have missed the point I sought to make.

I was not initiating another "Golden Eagles vs. Warriors" debate, which is what this thread has become.

My original point: While I have always thought Marquette's nickname change was done without good reason and was a transparently and an embarrassingly obvious effort to be "correct," the frequent references here and elsewhere to "Warriors" makes a mockery of Marquette.

If people are still serious about MU's bringing back "Warriors," get organized and show the university's officials and board of trustees that there are many people who -- 15 years later -- still view the nickname change as one of the silliest moments in Marquette University history.

It is never too late to undo most mistakes, especially one that gave new meaning to "deceitful" and to "ridiculous."

The only mockery of Marquette you refer to is that brought forth by the University's administration. We had a perfectly good and appropriate nickname until some bean counters caved to the PC crowd and facked it all up.

Nah...it has just become an unofficial nickname.  There is a reason that MU has really eliminated the Golden Eagle from its athletic gear.  You really can't find it anywhere.

If they HAD to change the name, I would have been good with "Hilltopers".  There was historical precedent and Hilltopper was not already in use by ten other college teams.   :(
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

Actually, what saddens me most is that so many "Warrior fans" just don't get it.  What did your Jesuit education stand for?  Men and women for others?  Many of you say how much you respect and honor the Warrior.  However, have your ever listened to the first Warrior speak about his treatment as a student and mascot at Marquette?  It was shameful.  While it is true the administration botched the handling of the name change, they were correct in living up to their core values in dropping the warrior mascot and name.

Please explain the "and name"?  I can buy the mascot part.  But the name "Warriors" with a different mascot is less offensive than the name "Golden Eagles" is to animal rights activists.

warrioreagle

In the event it hasn't already been suggested, what about a compromise such as Warrior Eagles or Eagle Warriors?  I don't think these awesome and graceful birds would mind.

Right on. I think we can all have qualms with HOW the name change happened, or how messy the 'Gold' fiasco was...but I think it is ignorant to disregard how Native Americans throughout the state/country HAVE expressed serious concerns with the limited/stereotypical representation of their people. Only people who are blind by privilege can tell nations of people that their "Ouch" isn't legitimate. I think it is shameful to see fans donning their headdresses, etc...

GO MARQUETTE! Change the name?.... Not back to Warriors, as there is a movement of PCers at MU that will never let it go down. The image is inseparable as the Native American stereotypes have yet to leave our stands..

To The Sultan of South Wayne:

"Warriors" is now Marquette's "unofficial" nickname? That seems stupid.

Also, you write: "There is a reason that MU has really eliminated the Golden Eagle from its athletic gear. You really can't find it anywhere."

Lift the veil of secrecy. What is that reason?

Oh, and there is plenty of MU gear to be found that reads "Golden Eagles" or shows the first or the recently redone Golden Eagles logo.

It clearly is the unofficial nickname since everyone uses it.  Clearly it seems "stupid" to you.  It doesn't to me, nor to many others.

I didn't say gear that "reads Golden Eagles."  I said that they don't use the Golden Eagle...as in the logo.  They are just de-emphasizing its use because it's controversial.  You won't find any Golden Eagle logo on anything associated with MU athletics.

You're right, they don't use the image.

This is one of the few times I absolutely agree with you.

It was an absolute travesty when they changed the name from Hilltoppers to Warriors.

Huge mistake.

As a proud member of the Northwest Nation of County Donegal Ireland....can you please tell Notre Dame that I am extremely offended by their fighting bearded midget mascot and I implore you to lobby to change their name and mascot...thank you in advance.  "Ouch" is the word I say every time I see that damn fighting midget bearded mascot.

The reason would be the impending lawsuit from Southern Miss for ripping off their eagle (sad thing is that I can't decide whether to put this in teal or not...)

I don't think disagree that there is a shift, but to say that logo use has vanished is false.

Learn...to...read...

"You won't find the Golden Eagle logo on anything associated with MU athletics."  Gear you can buy at the bookstore isn't athletic gear.

Nice try with the level-playing-field mentality garbage.
