Pretty fun stuff, still wish it was a Warrior, but Golden Eagles still rock based on this:

getting fired up for season. Buzz will have his hands full, but it will be fun at the BC as always.

I appreciate their enthusiasm for MU basketball...and TallTitan is one of the best posters around, but Golden Eagles do not "rock." They should be embarrassed to wear that thing.

So its been 15 years.  Can we move on from Warriors?

As opposed to this???

I think it might be time to move on.  As a younger alum I never really gave a crap about the Warriors nickname change and all of my memories of Marquette basketball have been as the Golden Eagles.

And to be honest as a member of the class of 2004, I thought it was a little ridiculous that my graduation ceremony got hijacked by an alum who never got over the whole Warriors name change thing.  And then all that really came of it was that we had to go through the whole Gold Debacle.  Its time to move on.

+1. I feel the exact same way about it.

Too bad you and others can't understand and appreciate the significance, pride, and history of Marquette Warriors. Maybe we should change the red color in the American flag to pink since red signifies blood and violence. Or maybe the PC crowd should just shut up or be told to do so.

Completely agree.

And my argument always is, Marquette has had various nicknames over the years. Why the infatuation with "Warriors"? Answer....they were called that during the McGuire years. It has nothing to do with the name "Warriors", it's just the memories of those moments in time. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but if I am...why not kicking and screaming to be, say, the Golden Avalanche again?

It's totally silly those people that can't let it go. It's a stinking nickname and mascot. Big deal!

Hey I'm not trying to be PC.  I understand that people were angry about the PC reasoning for it. Its pretty lame.  My point is that people are still hung up on this 15 years later, when being hung up on this isn't going to accomplish anything other than things like the Gold debacle.

There are a lot of us for whom Marquette basketball has always been the Golden Eagles and we have a lot of great memories from this era. Nothing is going to change it back to the Warriors, not even $1 million and a grandstanding speech at a Marquette Graduation.  Lets move on.

For the younger alum, I don't think you understand how the nickname and the traditions around it were such an integral part of the Marquette basketball experience for years.  Al McGuire...unique uniforms...the colorful floor and intimate atmosphere of the Mecca...the Warrior name...the Hamms beer song...all of it was part of the experience.  For a lot of us, who have seen all of this disappear over the course of the past 20 years, it makes us a little sad.

But I do understand how you may not appreciate that...and it doesn't offend me.  As I said before, I don't get as worked up about the nickname change any longer.

I just don't think that the mascot name change really denegrates any of those memories that you may have.  But I do find it a little ridiculous that the some of you will say that the memories that younger alums have as Golden Eagles are somehow cheapened by the fact that we're not the Warriors.

Oh I agree with that.  Your memories are your memories.  But college athletics is all about tradition.  And when traditions go away, your memories may remain, but your link to the school just isn't the same.

I loved the Warrior nickname, but I have learned to move on . . . I understand others may not have done so and appreciate their feelings/position on this matter
For me, it's too divisive to keep bringing this up, especially with the younger alums.  It was pointed out to me that in the next few years, most of our freshman class will be comprised of students who were born after the nickname changed.

That said,
TallTitan, you were an excellent Eagle.  I see how the little kids seem to love the Eagle.  I don't recall the kids flocking to Bluteaux

As one of the hated birds in this video, I struggled every game I worked because I love the tradition of the Warriors and the symbolism a Warrior brings to mind.  In essence, I hated myself since I hate the GE but was him.  I think what the fellow younger alums and students that did not grow up with the Warrior mascot is that the Warrior is the true representation of a Marquette athlete.  In the past few months, we've seen and heard Wesley, Vander, and a number of others be referred to as a "warrior".  This embodies the idea that I want to have whenever I hear someone talk about a Marquette athlete and why I feel the Warrior is such a stronger, better symbol of Marquette than the Golden Eagle.

T-Bone

As a member of the last Warrior class, I'm not too disappointed in the name change years later.  Then I was ticked - especially the way the administration seemed to hijack the voting.  If I remember correctly it was between The Lightning and the GEs.  Really??  Lightning??

Golden Eagles and the mascot have grown on me over time, though I still say Warriors.  Whether we are the Jumpin' Jesuits or the Gold, I know where my allegiance lies.

Plus we get to watch cool golden eagle videos now:

All-in-all a pretty bad-ass bird.

A courageous Warrior put his money where his mouth was, gave us all some hope that our long, regional nightmare could soon be over.

I guess that was the $1M to return to Warriors offer.  Was that done by the guest speaker at graduation?

Wayne Sanders, vice chair of the university's Board of Trustees, announced that "he and an anonymous trustee" were each prepared to pledge $1 million to the university if the institution would consider a return to the
Warriors nickname by the time Marquette entered the BIG EAST Conference in 2005-06.

Wild should have snatched the cash when offered. That 2 mil would have grown tremously from additional Warrior fans.
