Let's not hate on the guy too much.....every program cheats and we just haven't gotten caught.

TallTitan34

While I agree that there is alot of stuff we don't know about, I wouldn't go so far as to say every program cheats.

QuoteCalipari now has two forfeits in his career.  Well done.....

Actually it's two Final Four's being vacated and a 38 win season being forfeited....If you want a laugh, read the Kentucky boards....the UK fans are in denial about it possibly happening to them because they are so desperate for a winning team. Calipari is cancer and his continued recruitment of one and dones will lead to more incidents like this. Sadly Memphis doesn't have the cachet that some schools do so they get punished while the USCs of the world are allowed to survive unscathed.

I disagree; every program does not cheat. Programs like UNC don't have to because they have the luxury of being able to decide who they even will recruit. They have people lining up waiting for Roy to offer. Right now there are several 2010 and 2011 kids who have multiple offers from other top schools who are waiting for an offer from UNC which may or may not come. Their yield is so high that they have to be careful not to over offer.

Read through their boards at insidecarolina.com it offers an interesting (and very different) perspective on recruiting than what we see here. I would love to have MU be in the position of having to be careful about who they give offers to and to be able to choose from the best of the best day in and day out. Granted their fans can get delusional about getting everyone they offer but lately they have been cleaning Duke's clock when going head to head for recruits. This year their focus is on Harrison Barnes who most thought early on was a Duke lock but now Roy has gotten involved with him and is very focused on his recruitment. Other top 20 kids are being put in the position of waiting to see how that pans out before being offered themselves and they are willing to do it. It's a whole different ball game in Chapel Hill.

didnt MSU also have to forfeit their 84 final four with keith lee and Co.?

GGGG

Every program pushes and bends the rules...but not every program cheats.  Especially as blatantly as Memphis has.  And now Calipari is 2 for 2.  And yes, this is the second final four that Memphis has vacated.

+1, many programs hide in the gray

"It's just the NCAA wanting to make an example of someone.  They don't like UK getting a big time coach and back in the game either.

They can go fish."

Wow.  Just. Wow.

Three years from now, UK will be in the title game. One year later, they will have to forfeit. Calipari is as big a swine as you'll find anywhere. Andf it couldn't happen to a nicer school than UK, which has been despicable going all the way back to Adolph Rupp.

Yes, Stanford and Dartmouth are cheating their butts off.  Lehigh is another that the NCAA is doing a deep probe on.   ::)

Because the rule book is what it is, there are infractions all the time.  But let's not go to the point to imply they are purposely broken by all programs because that is simply not true.

TallTitan34

I think Memphis should have to take down their "National Champions 20??" banner as well.

What ever happened with the UConn scandal?  Is the NCAA investigating or just looking past that?

texaswarrior74

Listening to The Herd this morning, Collin kept saying that Calipari "is as slippery as an apron in a fast food restaurant..." He said he dated someone that was an insider (Sports Information Dept) when Cal was at UMass. Said the program was full of dysfunction and sleaziness (read cheating).

CBS Sports blog calling the NCAA hypocrites for not vacating Duke's wins in the Meggette case:

http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/5881996/16724605

Another example of the NCAA's selective enforcement and the way it protects certain programs and coaches.

lab_warrior

OOOoh!  Having them forfeit games 2 years after the fact.  That'll really show them.  What a toothless punishment.
And, as for Duke, they were penalized nothing for that Magette situation, if I remember.  So, yeah, I would call that "selective" punishment.

dsfire

Seems Memphis does suffer more than just the vacated wins.  From Yahoo sports:
QuoteIn addition to the lost season, Memphis must also return the money it received from the NCAA tournament to Conference USA and will be prevented from receiving future shares doled out in the conference's revenue-sharing program.

I'm still a little confused as to what the finding is.  The main issue ("The infractions committee said it struck hard with its penalties because the ineligible player was used the entire season.") seems to be Rose's SAT, which Memphis presumably didn't administer.  The article says Memphis claims they "did not have enough information to substantiate the allegations in November 2007 and cleared him to play," but not the source or nature of the allegations at that point.  At the end of the season SAT officials sent letters to Rose before eventually letting him, Memphis and the NCAA know that the test score was being voided.

Now, I don't for a second imagine Memphis is squeaky clean, but if the test administrators didn't decide the score was invalid until after the season was over... should Memphis have known earlier?

Also: regardless of whether the NCAA has found fault with Calipari, it just seems like a bad idea to hire a coach who seems to be one step ahead of disaster.  Sure, maybe he'll stay out of the fray, but who's to say the UK program will come out any better than UMass or Memphis?

spartan3186

Does anyone know how forefitting wins works? Does the losing team get to take a loss off the books? Do they get to add a win? I'm just curious how this effects everyone else's W-L record. I would assume that schools just get to take a L off the books and Memphis just offically went 0-2 on the season with loses to Tenn and Kansas.

MuMark

Do they have to give the ncca tourny money back?

How many times does this have to happen before the NCAA decides that Cal has to pay a price?

TallTitan34

When they always talk about how Memphis won X CUSA games in a row does that now mean that streak is taken away as well?

Does the team Memphis forfeited to in the Elite 8 get to raise a Final Four banner?
