Hardest Working Team On Hardwood
« on: January 26, 2007, 10:01:03 AM »
It's Friday and I don't feel like working at the moment so bear with me...

Why does the team need a tagline?  Everytime they announce it at the BC I cringe.  Sure, we may just be the hardest working team in the country...there's no way to measure that I suppose....but do we need to announce that with the team introductions?  It bothers me the same way they used to announce the student section as the "Gold Rush."

Yes, I do need to get out more....and yes, it's nitpicking but when you've won 5 straight gotta find something negative to talk about. :)

"Gold Rush" is worse, especially considering they as much as admitted they fixed the voting for the student section so "Golden Avalanche" wouldn't win. The BOTs thinks "Avalanche" is about a bar, rather than Marquette tradition. Ugh!!

I would've liked to see the student section called the Golden Avalanche....if they need a name at all....cool name and it ties into MU tradition.  But for now, I'm glad they don't have a name at all.

In all honesty, for a lot of people -- dare I say a majority -- it is about a bar.  I know I fall into that category.  I've always thought it was pretty cool that the bar name and the history match.  Frankly, I thought it would be a bit of an inside joke for Marquette people if the team returned to the Golden Avalanche and that is one of the names that I voted for -- for that very reason.  I think schools should have traditions/inside jokes like that.

They use that slogan on their radio ads on 1510. It's an extension. It's all about marketing and branding these days. Lots of competition for that entertainment dollar.

I'm 100% in favor of marketing....I think MU is doing a good job marketing the team and actually don't mind the slogan used for that purpose.  I just don't think it needs to be extended into the pre-game introductions...I'm sure people understand the connection....but it's cheesy.

There's a slogan every year.

"Big things are happening."
"Every ____ counts"
"Hardest working team on the hardwood."

What would be great is to tie everything together.
"Every fanatic counts"
"The Blue Collar Student Section."

And so on...

one of my buddies was the first name in the suggestion box for student section ideas... however, they took it right away and threw it out.  could you imagine the possibilities if he got his way and it stuck.

AND NOW THE BEST 6TH MAN IN THE COUNTRY... THE MARQUETTE GOLDEN SHOWER!!!!

that would get people pumped.  if santa clara university would let their students vote their school mascot the banana slug, why can't we vote the student section the golden shower?

Probably because that's the most terrible, idiotic, inappropriate name ever.

Golden Shower: not all that funny. But the above-referenced quote: now that is pretty funny.

wow, probably the lowest sense of humor ever.  everyone comes on here and talks about how big of a joke the board is making with nicknames.  then when someone makes a joke of the "known to be rigged" voting for the student section, its the most terrible an idiotic ever.  because we put the name in there expecting 100% for that name to be selected.  sorry, i should have realized that in order to get any respect or a rise out of anyone on this board, the nickname suggestion had to do something with Warriors.  how about if we put in the idea box Golden Warrior Shower???

Actually, I'm fine without the Warriors, but Golden Showers is just stupid. I see it was an attempt at a joke, but it was failed miserably.

Don't apologize, marqptm.

"Golden Showers" is funny.  To 6th graders.

See, sometimes a joke isn't funny, when it's "too easy".

Q: What did Tarzan say when he saw a bunch of elephants coming over the hill?

A: Look, here come the elephants over the hill!

Kind of a har dee har har type joke.  Probably hysterical after 10 RW&Bs.  Not so much the next day.

Uhm, Santa Clara isn't the Banana Slugs.  That is UC Santa Cruz, not even a DI school.
