I hate to say it, but my guess is the student section will be a tad sub-par for the Wisconsin game because of finals coming up next week. From what i have heard alot of people either aren't drinking or won't drink that much before or after the game. Trust me I won't be one of those people, but thats just what I've heard. Its a pretty bad weekend to have such a big game. Oh and to all those alums saying how wild and crazy they used to get, this year has been completely different. Public safety and MPD has been extremely strict this year with alcohol violations. House parties are absolutely terrible now because every single decent one gets busted by 11 pm. Oh and instead ref get off your knees... lets be a little more original and go with my personal favorite.. Hey ref does your wife know you're F****** us?

Hate to burst the bubble and be the old (24?) fart alum, but the MU-UW game has been played the weekend before finals for a couple years now (At least since 2004).

Including the 2006 game, which the student section had no problem bringing the noise

Likewise, "Hey ref does your wife know..." is hardly original. I think I first heard that one in high school.

Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

I'm taking some undergrad classes again as an alum, so I'm buried here in the library this afternoon.  For the spring finals, most students would be rolling in at noon on the Saturday before finals.  Today, though, I was here at 9:15, and the place was packed.  It's now noon, and it's a freaking zoo, PLUS I've seen quite a few people dressed for the game already, or overheard plans to bail out of here at 2 or 3 to hop in line from others I've eavesdropped on/talked to.

So I wouldn't exactly sell the students short quite yet tonight.  I've have hope they'll turn out.  The 2006 game was at 1 in the afternoon, and still plenty showed up knowing exams were hanging over their heads. Besides, anyone who's a senior or a 5th year has been thru at least 1 home Wisconsin game already, so they know the drill by now.  You'll probably see more upperclassmen there tonight than freshman and sophomores, since juniors/seniors have a lot more experience in prepping for their exams and understanding of what their exams are than most 1st semester freshmen.  And more upperclassmen usually correlates to more alcohol consumption, so all of those who are complaining the students don't drink enough probably should go check out the beer lines behind the student section at some point during a time out and adjust their opinion accordingly.

Me?  We'll, studying 'til about 3, going home to take a nap, and cracking the booze at about 5:30.  With the weather, this is one day my crusty 25 year old a$$ is glad he kept his regular season tickets this year.
The General has taken on a new command.

I don't think it's very appropriate to make a correlation between being a "good" fan and drinking a lot.  Sure, alcohol does wonders for ridding ourselves of pesky inhibitions but maybe we should reflect on what's expected of we fans, as members of the NCAA.  I also think we need to recognize the fact that we are one of the few colleges lucky enough to have the privilege to drink at games.

Before I get up too high on my soap box, I just want to admit that I've enjoyed my fair share of libations at the Bradley Center -- but after graduation because I too was in band -- and in a manner I consider to be responsible.  I don't need to say something that takes away someone's respect to support my team.  Say what you will about being a nerd or being privileged.  I don't care.  I put in my time and hard work as a student and fan, just like any of the rest of us.

The NCAA's policy on drinking at collegiate sporting events is as follows:

Illegal use and abuse of alcohol is contrary to the mission of the NCAA and destroys such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility; and

The NCAA takes seriously its responsibility to present participation in sports as a positive experience for student-athletes and fans alike, and this responsibility includes educating student-athletes about alcohol abuses and providing positive messaging related to the legal use of alcohol.

As for the article on which this whole thread is based, I think it's a shame and a pity that the writer had to experience that.  I understand that worse things could've been said [and probably were], but that reflects badly on our school's presence.

Shame on you Marquette.  We're better than that.

I wonder if Wagner will have a new article out in a few days.  The student section really ripped him a new one before the game started including the majority of the lower bowl chanting stuff at him.

personally, I liked the "andrew wagner...andrew wagner...andrew wagner" ... followed by the "you suck"

well, the BC was originally built to house a hockey team.  Great seats everywhere in the house at Admirals games.

since they don't sell upper bowl tix unless it's against the Wolves normally, I'd still argue great seats...maybe not the actual seats but the views from the seats.

TallTitan34

I only go to watch the Admirals when they play my beloved Rockford Icehogs.  In all of those games the upper deck was open.  Granted one had a Bret Michaels concert after it...

When I worked at the BC, Rick Springfield had a concert after an Admirals.

I was just in awe.

jaybilaswho?

I for one was proud of the student section saturday night. They showed up in mass with finals looming. I really cannot say anything about their drinking habits that night or how rude/crude/awesome their chants might have been as i sit in the corner behind the MU bench so the only chants or remarks i heard were teh ones that mustard enough support to carry that far.

It was a great game and if the beer lines in teh student sections were as long as the ones in my section, they probably were drinking their fair share.  :)

After reading the article last week, I would agree with one or two paragraphs of it. The whole gist of his article was not that the students were yelling at our own players that was only a small part, the majority was about the students ragging the refs to much. As was shown on Saturday, when its a big game the students do not just rag on the refs they are into the game. The game this idiot was writing about was a non-conference game that no one cared about and neither did he since he did not say one word about the outcome of the game in his article. The students tore him a new one on Saturday and it was awesome, I hope he writes another blog about that.

I'm with you Jaybilas.  I thought for sure the freezing/windy conditions coupled with finals would keep some people home or at least keep them out of line before the doors opened, but once everyone in line filled in the seats, the student section was at least 2/3 full 2 hrs. before tip.  Oh and the "f*@k the badgers" chant was out in full force.  I could actually make it out pretty clear at one point on the TWS replay last night.

let's get back on track.  F'bombs, racial slurs, disability related slurs, and the like are not acceptable. I don't care where you go.  There is a difference between being loud and obnoxious and just acting like an idiot.  While I'm all for the former, let's represent the school and ourselves with a little more dignity than some of the students have shown this year.  MUfan12 and Ahoya know how to do the obnoxious stuff without crossing the line.  Myself, gwaki, TT and others have tried to carry on that type of fan experience in the student section.  Hell, half the damn people that have come to the games this year don't even pay attention to the game. They are too busy commenting on how an opposing team's player has a small t-shirt on under his jersey or just swearing randomly without thinking about what's going on with the game.

Let's beat the piss out of the Commies on the court and get loud without calling people "faggots" and f'ers

I agree with you here man... and we rarely agree.  I get annoyed by the lack of CREATIVITY more than anything.  Any moron can make fun of someone who is missing an arm... but if you do it, you bring yourself and others around you down to the level of the moron.  Also, the whole "F the ________" chant is so awful... it is the epitomy of lazy.  May as well chant, "We can't think of anything better to say"... I mean, if I show up to a UW game and I hear "F Marquette" does that even phase me?  nope, I would laugh because it is probably the most unoriginal chant in sports.

Saying we are 'weak' compared to a lot of schools is fine by me.  You don't have to be an ass hat to prove that we are 'strong'.  Believe me, I got drunk before the games, during the games, and after the games and it wasn't that hard to maintain a buzz.

Pregame with liquor or some Beast Ices (mmm black shield) and bring in a flask if you really can't handle buying beer at the BC...

I hear the Duke student section is pretty creative.  In fact I was told at a game against Vanderbilt they were chanting "Safety School!"

A lot of schools use the "____ Rejects" chant too.  ND chants "Backup College" when they play Boston College.

The last line of the UNC fight song contains the phrase "go to hell Duke" which now has also been substituted with "go to hell State" depending on which nearby rival school they are playing.

The rivalry and hatred between Duke (referred to as dook by Tarheel loyals) and UNC is fiercer than the Ohio State/ Michigan rivalry I grew up with and with them only eight miles apart you can only imagine the level of vitriol spewn by their fans..I've never seen anything like it anywhere, even the Texas/OU rivalry I see on display virtually everyday pales by comparison.

BrewCity83

I don't think Fr. Wild would take too kindly to us telling anyone to "go to hell"...

He's been saying that to alumni for years.

It seems as though quite a few people like to complain the lack of creativity in the student section, so I suggest that before each game you start a thread with some chants you come up with.  It seems as though even when we win everyone has to complain about something.  Maybe you should be happy that Marquette has fans that want to wait out in the snow and cold for 14 hours for a basketball game the weekend before finals.  Go to a Badger home game and the fans don't show up till half way through the game...but they are drunk so they must be better. Get off the we don't drink enough line, its old.

And as a side note, its not easy to sneak anything in the BC, they pat you down before you get in.
