That has always annoyed me. Why does the University of Missouri refer to itself as "MU"?

sailwi

I have asked the question before but have never gotten an answer as to why most of the old Big 8 schools refer to themselves as OU, KU, MU, CU but their formal title is the University of ....

Tough to call him a kid when he's 22 and married.  Can't say this is surprising though, Missouri promised him a starting job right away.

I believe Missouri usually calls itself Mizzou. But we are a better school anyway.

Correct morals arise from knowing what man isâ€"not what do-gooders and well-meaning old Aunt Nellies would like him to be.

Because UM is Michigan

I had the same question -- years ago, a good friend of mine from IU (Indiana University, not University of Idaho ;D) moved to Kansas City and I asked him about this bizarre form of dyslexia that plagues that area of the country.  He claims he has done some "man on the street" research and has uncovered no real reason for it.  So the mystery lingers.

So come up with something original, like Mizzou--and stick with it, rather than a backwards, abbreviation.

I live in Missouri, and all my Mizzou friends (including two brothers who went there) have the same question about Marquette.

then there is the University of Kansas, aka KU, not to be confused with the University of Kentucky, aka U of K.

Mizzou is a cheer, too: "M-I-Z" goes one side of the arena; "Z-O-U" responds the other.

So Big 12.

So Midwest suburban gone off to a land grant college town.

So pukey.

But then, it beats "rock chalk jayhawk."

As a KU alum, I'll greatly disagree with you on that.  ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK.  National champs my friend!   ;)

Maybe you should hang out with people who are more intellectual because it is Marquette University and the University of Missouri.  "all my Mizzou friends (including two brothers who went there)" should take a class in appropriate language.
