Looks like Huggins has finally started to leave his mark on the WVU boys...

PITTSBURGH -- Two West Virginia University basketball players were charged with scuffling with police and underage drinking after a fight at a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Joe Mazzulla and Cameron Thoroughman were arrested Monday at PNC Park, where the Pirates were playing the Colorado Rockies. The two were in custody and awaiting arraignment Tuesday.

Mazzulla, a 6-foot-2 junior from Johnston, R.I., was charged with aggravated assault, hindering apprehension and underage drinking. Thoroughman, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Portsmouth, Ohio, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and underage drinking.

The school's athletic department said it would have a statement later Tuesday.

The 20-year-old players began arguing with police when they refused a request for identification, according to a criminal complaint. The officers said the two smelled of alcohol.

Thoroughman said he did not have ID, according to the report. Police said he lied about his age and threatened a security guard. Police said officers brought Thoroughman to the ground when he refused to put his arms behind his back. While Thoroughman was struggling with the officer, Mazzulla tried to grab his teammate and punched a police sergeant.

Bob's WVU players are just getting warmed up. Wait until one of them punches a horse. Guaranteed in his first 10 years he will have more players show up in mug shots than he will in graduation pictures.

And of course the last WVU wants to see is another Donald Little incident.  A lot of people kidnap their college roommates, beat them and burn them with a coat hanger over a missing $2,500.

Huggins definitely didn't recruit Mazzulla to Morgantown and I don't think he brought in Thoroughman either.

This would be akin to Cubillan and Mbakwe getting into it at Miller Park. The difference being people wouldn't dare poke fun at Buzz; they'd be blaming the previous coach.

Mazzulla has always seemed like a good kid. Must have been pretty tossed.

Agreed.  Both were Beilein recruits.

He's playing in Kuwait, not exactly a hoops hotbed.  On the plus side, the possibility of torture will keep him from being a repeat offender.

Wow...how in the world would you know where Donald Little is playing these days?  Unless it shows up in a google search right away, that's some pretty impressive stuff...I think. ;)

Seriously.  I didn't even know they played.   :D How did you know that?

Simple.  USBasket.com, generally the best place to find former college players throughout the world.  They've got a thing called NCAA tracker, which keeps track of former college players.  Just pick a school, and it will list the most recent information for all players out there professionally that attended that school.  Little is playing for Al Jahraa in the Kuwaiti First Division.

Here's Marquette's page:

They may not have been recruited by Huggins but he is the one that sets the rules.  Beilein may have had stricter rules off the court than Huggins does so who knows if this would have happened if he was still coaching there and Huggins wasn't. There's really no way to know if it's Huggins not putting in place harsh penalties for reflecting negatively on the program and university or if it's just the character of the players that caused this or some combination.

I know what you are saying... however, I didn't have any "harsh penalties" for my behavior in college... and I still knew better than to get drunk and argue with a cop.

Hard to bash on the coach who inherited guys who aren't smart enough to behave. Underage drinking isn't good, but isn't unexpected. Arguing with a cop is just stupid.

agreed. we'll see what kind of program Huggie decides to make in Morgantown over the next few seasons.

Can we go back to the part about underage drinking not being good?  I dont' understand.  That is part of what made my MU experience so memorable...most of the time.

mu03eng

I agree with the idea that you can't indite Huggy for these players behavior as he inherited them.  However, what is in Huggy's court is what he does to them.  If he lets them skate the tone for his WVU coaching legacy is set and we will see a lot more of this sort of thing.
"A Plan? Oh man, I hate plans. That means were gonna have to do stuff. Can't we just have a strategy......or a mission statement."

Wow...hard to believe somebody from Johnston, RI AND a Huggins coached player could be a complete jackass.  Who knew??

I'd have to drink too if I was at a Pirates/Rockies game.

Funny...that's why my experience isn't quite so memorable, not enough memories of all the times I was drinking.
