UConn has organized a short-notice news conference regarding Jim Calhoun...I wonder what this is all about.

CAINMUTINY

Sounds as if he has some form of cancer....

jt92

Sorry it was Eastern time.  He had a cancerous mass in his neck.  It's been removed, doctor says he is cancer free. Going to continue to coach but what he wanted to let people know because he has cancelled a lot of events and wanted to put to rest rumors.

ATWizJr

He had surgery on May 6 to treat a recurrence of skin cancer.  They removed some lymph nodes and a cancerous mass the size of a small golf ball.  Will begin radiation therapy in June and currently is expected to return to coach at UCONN this season with no significant loss of time.

Not to sound assy, and best wishes to Calhoun and everything, but aren't all golf balls the same size?
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

No, actually.  The difference can be very tiny, but there are differences.

Best wishes to Coach Calhoun for a speedy recovery.
Given the location of the cancer and the fact the lymph nodes were taken out, I would not be surprised to find out that his thyrod also has to/had to go.

European balls are smaller, least that's what I've heard

ATWizJr

The golf balls used at the British Open are the European golf balls and they are slightly smaller than the ones used here.  you can look it up.

Glad you are concerned about Calhoun's health.

Sweenz

Hope Calhoun stays healthy this year and wish him the best of luck.

UCONN will be very good, and I am looking for them to be Big East Champs this year. They could be scary good with everyone back.

They used to be smaller, but they aren't anymore.  The last British Open to use the small ball(1.62 inches in diameter instead of 1.68) was in 1973.  The small ball was outlawed completely in 1988.  Now, the minimum size for all balls, is 1.68 whether in Europe or the US.  There are larger balls available, in theory to eliminate excessive spin for slicers, like the Top Flite Magna.  But they are fairly rare.

ATWizJr

In his presser, Calhoun himself referred to the mass as being "the size of a smaller golf ball."  Maybe he was referring to the old european ball as unsed under the R & A rules in the past.

I think the point is to be concerned about his health, not about the accuracy of the descripion of the size of the mass.  The description was his.

Oh, it was only the size of a small golf ball. Well, that sounds like much to do about nothing. A tumor the size of a regular golf ball merits a press conference. But, a small golf ball...could have just sent a one-page press release out to the wire or something.
