Now that Crean is wearing candy stripped pants, will Izzo cut him as much slack?  I say no, he will eat Crean's lunch.

MSU in running for elite Wisconsin hoops star

http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080424/OPINION03/804240305

According to Wilson, part of the reason for the Spartans' hot-then-cold pursuit strategy was his status as a crucial target for Izzo's good friend and former protégé, Tom Crean. Now that Crean is a Big Ten adversary at Indiana, the restrictor plates have apparently been removed from the race for Wilson's services.

"Actually, I've been getting a lot more attention from Michigan State ever since the Tom Crean move (to Indiana)," Wilson reported. "I think that played a big role in everything.

"(Not hearing from Michigan State for a while) is not really a big deal. Actually, it shows me what kind of person Tom Izzo is and how much respect he has for other people. In order to earn respect you have to give respect. That just shows me what kind of person he is off of the court. He actually cares for other people."

That favorable impression could come in handy for Izzo when he does battle with the other heavyweights on Wilson's list.

"I'm also visiting Duke, UCLA, Kansas, and I'm deciding the last visit between Tennessee, Texas and Purdue," he said. "I'm going to go a couple weeks after school gets out. I'll still be considering other schools. Those are just the ones I know I'll visit."

Norm

Looks like Marquette is out of the picture for Jamil Wilson. No MU mention on schools visiting. SOunds like he's talking about official visits, since he mentions five - MSU, Duke, UCLA, Kansas and either Tennessee, Texas or Purdue. Ah well.

jficke13

He's already said that he's not going to visit MU or UW because he lives so close.

butchbadger

I think he means "official visits". I know he has been to UW and pretty sure he has been to Marquette on unofficial visits.

4everwarriors

May as well cross him off the list. The only Warriors that have a shot at landing him are the Golden State Warriors. He'll go to a top program out of state.

So Izzo has so much respect and love for Crean that after TC has been gone from the nest for 9 years, he won't recruit a kid in TC's back yard.  But Crean is gone from Marquette for 36 hours and he has contacts out to Erik Williams, Tyshawn Taylor and Nick Williams.

Tells us more and more about Crean, doesn't it.

Why?  He's allowed so many "official" visits.  He doesn't need an official visit to MU.  He's been on campus many times and knows what it is about.

It has nothing to do with official or unofficial visits. What's happening with Wilson is he clearly has the talent to attract offers from better programs. That coupled with the fact that Buzz is unproven results in going someplace else. I don't think T-cubed would have signed him were he still here.

A team of Nick Williams, Taylor, Jamil Wilson, Erik Williams....wow.  I think with those three, Crean would have had a great chance to land Wilson.

Now we'll see.

From what I've read this is spot on.  Wilson has said he wouldn't visit either MU or Madison "officially" anymore because he's been to both places so many times in the past.

shaquilvaine

No reason to cross MU off the list.  He likes MU very much despite the coaching change and has said so. It will come down to MU or an ACC school.   ;)

Ion't think so. Now Crean is going head to head with Izzo so all bets are off. Does not say a thing about Crean.

I would have to agree with Irwin.  What does Crean going head to head with Izzo now have to do with anything?  Crean and Williams won't be going head to head, but he was recruiting the incoming class at Marquette (Buzz's team).  When Crean left Izzo for Marquette, Izzo didn't attempt to take players off of Crean (Wilson until they are going head to head and Wilson is not in Crean's back yard).

Erik Williams clearly has the talent to attract offers from "better" programs as well.  Yes, Jamil is a better player, but Williams could've left for a place like Indiana ("It's Indiana) or a Texas (his home state).  Do I think we will get him?  I actually doubt it, but I wouldn't say we should "cross him off our list" quite yet.  The fact that he's waiting so long to commit probably plays into our benefit, as the "top" programs in the country will probably offer scholarships to other players who are just as good as him before he decides to announce where he will go.  That and the fact that he probably would prefer being closer to home.  We'll see.

Until Erik signs on the dotted line, I'm not 100% we'll get him either.

What stopped Izzo from recruiting Korey Lucious while knobhead was here? BTW, I agree with Chicos on this one. Will believe EW when he puts on a Warrior's uni.

Tells me something about TC....Izzo wasn't interested in stealing TC's in state recruit, so he backed off.  Then TC takes a job in the Big Ten.  I never thought TC would go to IU because of his ties to MSU.  After seeing TC coach in the NCAA Tourney against Izzo I'm amazed TC wants to put himself through that again ?-(

I would hope that we weren't recruiting Korey.  I think Izzo started to recruit him/offered him way too early.  I don't think Korey is going to see much court time there at all, especially during his first two years.  If he had to transfer from King because Gosz had "too much of a military style" approach what does he expect from Izzo?  To be able to go out and do whatever he wants on the court and skip practices when he feels like it like he did at Pius?  Doubtful.  Funny how the year before Pius gets Korey they have one very good player (D'Angelo Jackson...went to Creighton and then to UWGB) who plays to the strengths of his TEAM and they make the State Semifinals and then Korey and his boys come in and have much more talent but can't even win the Classic Eight Conference.  He's a head case.  And yes, I do know him more than just having seen him or heard stories.

Scratch Jamil off the list. Like others have said, he's being recruited by teams with much, much more fanfare than us. I don't see it happening at all. I'd give our chances at 10%. Just a nice number to pull out of my butt, amongst other thoughts or opinions. I love MU, but we don't match up with Izzo or Duke, not with a coach with no experience. Maybe in a year or two, but I think Jamil will come down to bad timing ruining our shot.

Win in '08/09 and get a stud next year, Buzz.

In 12 years at Michigan State he has one National Championship, four Final Fours, four regular season Big Ten Championships, two Big Ten Tournament Championships, 10 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and four National Coach of the Year Awards.  His career record is 287-121.  Those 287 wins are 9th most by a coach in his first 12 years ever.  His .727 winning percentage in the NCAA Tournament is 5th best among active coaches in the nation.  I wish we at Marquette could consider that overrated; however, I'd take a Final Four every 3 years (Izzo's average).  In fact, I'd take 4 Final Fours in the HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL.  Izzo himself has more Final Fours in his 12 years at Michigan State than Marquette University has in it's history, yet he is an overrated coach?  Not sure I quite understand...

THEGYMBAR

Wade---100% agree with your post.

MSU has a bar higher than MU and Izzo set that bar. TC had a bar much lower. His was to impress others to get another job. MSU is what MU should want to be. Recruit the best players possible and want to be Top 15 program. MSU has one thing over MU.....IZZO.
