If a few guys say no, I'd talk to Gregory.  But this quick makes it seem like he was #1 on the list.

MU88 a frequent Scout.com poster is usually right about MU and he nails it here, MU by in large does the conservative thing.

This article says Pearl may be itchy, why not scratch that itch?

Speaking of wanting to get a few players out of Ohio, I was thinking about this earlier today...In his 9 years here, I can think of only 1 player Crean signed out of Michigan - Brandon Bell, and we all know how that worked out. Is that really all though? If so, I would say that isn't very good.

James Matthews...who was here and gone very quickly.

Completely agree. With Phil Martelli not a viable option, Pearl remains my number 1 choice. He's had success everywhere he's been, he can recruit, knows the Midwest, familiar with the Milwaukee market, the entire Big 10 hates him, Crean hates him and vice versa, UWM fans would now hate him...Could there be a better choice?

NavinRJohnson

So while there were a couple of players, my overall conclusion was correct - Crean had zero success recruiting Michigan.

Reading the Dayton boards, they'll all personally drive Gregory to Milwaukee. They can't get rid of him fast enough apparently.

Since Izzo is the puppetmaster behind all of this, can we get Gregory a tanning booth?

I don't post much, but I would if one would have read some of the posts on the MU boards, you would have thought we wanted to run Crean out of town too.....

Daniel

Wow - it seems like from this reaction I also hope this is not true - I read the piece, and it really seems lik ehe did not do much at Dayton.  Can he recruit? OMG - please - let's get a first-class coach!

nyg

The article was wierd.  Initially he writes its a done deal for Gregory, based upon him not wearing any Dayton logos.  Then he goes to the next paragraph and states if the Gregory to MU deal falls through, look for Rick Majerus.   Uh??????  Done deal/falls through????  Only thing that scares me is the fact Anthony Grant is an alumni of Dayton, which would put a wrench in things for MU.

Appears this is another "don't let the door hit your rear on the way out" situation with Gregory and the fanbase. Why even consider him, sounds as if he is a reject from Dayton.  If no Grant, then go after Bronwell, at least he is well liked and thought of.

Hiring Gregory would be safe and conservative.  And boring.  5-7 years from now, we'll be right back here.  Let's mix it up, people!!  Why not?  We got the Big East, the facilities, the fans, all the coach has to do is, at minimum, match Crean's success (which shouldn't be difficult)... we can go in any number of directions with this hire.

lab_warrior

Ugh...NO WAY.  Remind me how many tournament games--check that--APPEARANCES--this joker has made??  I'd throw up in my mouth if this guy was hired.  Reeks of mediocrity.

Norm

Is Izzo looking out for Marquette or an ex-assistant? Why would he have such a big say anyway?

I would take Anthony Grant over Brian Gregory any day.

Big Papi

If its true that Pearl is not happy being fourth in line at Tennessee, I sure wouldn't mind going after him.  Now that would be a hire compared to the names that are being thrown around.

"Brian Gregory's going, going, gone to Marquette.

"It's all but a done deal," he said.

The University of Dayton coach? That Brian Gregory? To Marquette?

It absolutely makes too much sense."

well, I don't know how I feel about Gregory, but I do like how the columnist said this:

"Crean bolted from Marquette for a worse job in Bloomington, Ind., as head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.
Sorry, folks. Hate to say it. But it's a step down."

I wouldn't necessarily agree. Indiana's not a step down, but it's nice to hear some high regard from the press for once.
