ESPN just confirmed it for me.  It will be upconverted, but not in true HD

The Lens

Does upconverted just mean it will be simulcast on ESPN HD?

At least its an ESPN game...I don't have ESPN2 (thanks Time Warner)...ESPN 2 always looks worse on my HD TV than it does on reg TVs.

Yes I know Chicos I could get DirecTV...do they have HD DVRs and all local (Milw) channels in HD yet?

Thanks for checking.  At least those expecting HD tomorrow won't be completely caught off guard.  I have noticed, that usually the upconversion still looks clearer than SD, so it's not all bad.

We've had HD DVRS for about 3 years now.  :-*

CBS we do not have due to contractual negotiations still ongoing between CBS and DIRECTV.

Isn't the NCAA tournament on CBS?

Weak.  Seriously, what does upconverted mean in this context?  Do they just take the 480i signal and process it as 720p without formating 16:9?  ESPN always has crap HD broadcasts anyway... On par with FOX.  CBS sets the bar for broadcasts in my book.

The problem with CBS is they have so few cameras and production trucks.  That's why on every Sunday NFL game only about half the games on CBS are in HD while usually all of the FOX games are.

HD still has a long way to go in many respects, but it will get there eventually.

The Lens

Chicos, i know you have HD DVRs....but are the priced competively, when I last checked (about 8-9 months ago) they were not.

The Local HD is also a big deal for me.  When I checked last the DirecTv clerk said...just get HD bunny ears...not exactly what I wanted to do/  Trust me with ESPN2HD, NFL Net, Sunday Tik & ESPNU, DirecTv is what I would prefer to have but HD is my ultimate decider.

wmvs milwaukee public tv has been HD for years.
only true hd studio in the area.
and only fully hd remote truck around.

TVDirector

what upconverted means is not necessarily 480i to 1080i.
usually means a digital or analog NTSC signal- 525i being routed to a HD upconverter box which makes transcodes it to 480/720/or1080i or similar.

takes less bandwith, costs much less to produce and deliver.

it's essentially the same as 16x9 standard def.

just looks impressive cause its wide vs. 4x3

Great info, thanks.  So if ESPN is truly upconverting as Chico states... it will be in standard def but 16:9 on ESPNHD?  I don't recall seeing any broadcasts like this yet on ESPNHD, so it'd surprise me.  Usually they have only 480i (in 4:3) or 720p (in 16:9).

ChicosBailBonds

It definitely will not be in 1080i.  ESPN doesn't broadcast in 1080. Everything is 720p as they believe that is a better format for sports.
