Ryan Amoroso 3rd Team All-MWC
« on: March 12, 2008, 02:47:14 PM »
Ryan Amoroso received third-team all conference recognition after being one of the most productive players in the Mountain West during league play. The Burnsville, Minn., native finished his first run through the MWC averaging 12.6 points (12th) and 7.4 rebounds (2nd), while connecting on 50.6 percent of his field goal attempts (5th). A model of consistency on the boards, Amoroso grabbed at least six rebounds in 14 of the 16 conference games and finished the season collecting at least that many in 11 straight outings. The Marquette transfer's effort on the glass also put him in a tie for third in defensive rebounding (5.00) and fourth in offensive rebounding (2.44). Amoroso recorded 10 double-digit scoring performances, including three 20-plus point games, and had 10 or more rebounds twice during league play.

There are those who blamed Ryan by name for our loss to Alabama!

"A model of consistency on the boards"

I found that quote quite entertaining.

I guess I can add the Damian Saunders blurb here in case it interests anyone, since he made the A10 All-Rookie Team.

Quote
Freshman Damian Saunders (Waterbury, Conn./Notre Dame Prep) was named to the Rookie Team, junior Shawn James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) earned a spot on the Defensive Team and - in a vote of the league's sports information directors - graduate student Kieron Achara (Stirling, Scotland/Maine Central Institute) was named Student-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. Achara was also named to the Academic Team for the third time.

Saunders, who was named A-10 Rookie of the Week three times this season, leads the team with 45 steals and is second on the team with a 5.2 rebounds per game average. He is third in blocks (37) and fourth in 3-pointers made (24-of-68, .353). Saunders' blocked shot total is the second-highest ever by a DU freshman (the record of 54 was set by Derrick Alston in 1990-91).

To be clear, I wish both of those kids the best.
It's too bad it couldn't have worked out to have them here.

There were  some folks here that though Saunders was going to be a bust.

Until he went elsewhere and played well, at which time Crean became an idiot for "forcing" him out.

As for Ryan, he didn't want to be at Marquette and, by all accounts, Marquette didn't want him. Glad he's doing well in San Diego, but there's no point in fretting over what could have/should have been. He and MU weren't meant to be.

At the risk of sounding like a dope...I don't remember Damian Saunders.  Was he recruited by MU?

He was committed to MU.  We were one scholarship over, and in August Damian Saunders was denied enrollment due to academic concerns.  He enrolled at Duquesne during the first week of the fall semester.

Just to add on, there was also the matter of a drug arrest over the summer. crean denied that was a reason for him losing his scholie, but I would be surprised if it didn't factor into it somehow.

By the way, anyone know the status of Saunders' case?

While I wish Ryan and Damian the best, remember that they're receiving these accolades in the Mountain West and A-10, respectively, neither of which is quite on par with the Big East.

Could they have helped us? Sure, but I doubt we'd be appreciably better with either one of them on the team.

Best of luck, Ryan & Damian!
