Remembering Al...
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:26:50 PM »
I was digging at some stats and just realized that Rick Majerus has now passed Al in career wins (422 vs. 406), winning % (.742 vs. 737) and NCAA appearances (12 vs. 9).  Amazing legacies.  This led me to some remembrances about Al that folks have left since he died.  I cut and pasted one that shows the man Al was.  He would be proud of Rick passing him as he would of TC.

Let's win the BET!

"My favorite memory of Al McGuire is from the mid 70's when the team was leaving Milwaukee to go to play in the final four tournament. Everyone on Milwaukee, on campus, etc. was very excited as you would imagine. I remember Al standing outside the bus that would take the team to the airport and saying to a reporter that he was excited for the players, the school and the city that the team was going to the final four. However, everyone should keep this game in perspective because there were Americans dying in Vietnam and other much more important things going on in the world. He said, "win or lose," next week our game will be coffee break talk." I don't think I have ever heard a coach express such perspective at a time like that. What a class act!"
