Quote from: JWags85 on December 31, 2025, 12:54:42 PMIf you dislike Jimmy, then yes its not a great look. Otherwise, that is some of the most mundane trash talk you will ever see.  Any white guy who has played competitive basketball in a racially diverse environment has been called "white boy", in both complimentary and taunting fashion.  Unclutch your pearls.

What a horrible take. Liking Jimmy Butler and being able to recognize distasteful, racially charged behavior are not two mutually exclusive things.

There's a clear difference between calling someone a "white boy" when you have the established rapport and friendly history with, versus going out and transparently using the term as a blatant insult to a complete stranger. Regardless of how universally acceptable an expression is, it's the intent with which it's used that matters. And in Jimmy's case, it's clearly anything but positive.

You know, there was once a time when any black person in a racially diverse environment had been called the N word in both complimentary and taunting fashion. I guess we wrong about tabooing the N word. Black people should've just unclutched their pearls.

We're now equating "white boy" with the N word?  Please say you're joking.  The N word has never been used by a white person to black person in a way that doesn't elicit some sort of negative reaction to the black community at large.

Jimmy Butler, well known trash talker and antagonist, raised by a white family, with a biracial daughter, and nearly all white business partners...is totally intending it as a racially charged attack and not a garden variety trash talk moniker.  A moniker that I would bet my life savings wouldn't offend a single white player in the NBA, beyond any associated frustration from getting cooked on the court.

Clearly you missed the point. No, I'm not trying to equate the N word with "white boy" because the two are nowhere near identical.

The point of me using that example was to highlight that the mindset of "race-based taunting has already been around, so it's okay to keep doing it!" is a stupid and frankly lazy way to think. Just because a certain behavior happens and is tolerated doesn't mean that it's a good thing, nor something not worth changing.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think it's the biggest deal in the world. Notice how I didn't go on some diatribe when I posted the link. I don't think Jimmy Butler should be cancelled or fined because that would be dumb. Calling someone "white boy" in the manner he did is simply far from what you'd expect or want from someone who represents Marquette on the biggest stage, and that's all I pointed out.

What I find far more aggravating, however, is how racially tone deaf people like you are.

I didn't miss the point, I just found the two examples so wildly differing in magnitude that they didn't merit comparison.  Its like a discussion of a shoplifting incident and paralleling it to armed robbery cause they are both theft crimes.

Its pretty rich to call me racially tone deaf cause I choose to acknowledge that not all racial language is equal due to decades of social and cultural factors.  I'm also not one of those people that claim members of minority groups cannot be racist, but "white boy" is such a nothing burger of a term in American culture, no matter what the intent.

Would you be clutching your pearls and saying "what a bad look for Jimmy as a representative of Marquette" if he was calling Wolf a "b***h" instead, cause we should not allow gender fueled language to persist in our society?  Maybe so, to which I would encourage you to take some deep breaths.

I fully agree its not a big deal and nothing should be done!  And you didn't post a diatribe, but you still felt the need to post a link in a thread that is 99% highlighting the positive accomplishments of MU players in the NBA to tsk tsk it and then IMMEDIATELY get heated and escalate when I disagreed.

We have to bring Jimmy on board since he has money.
Kolek is rocking it!

I definitely got called that while hooping at the Rec Center in a derogatory fashion in the 90s, but what would happen if roles were reversed?

The most offensive part of that clip with Jimmy's flop - Jalen Brunson and SGA would have been embarrassed by that one.

I'd love for him to finish out this season with the Knicks to get to chase a title as a rotational player.

Ive mentioned that he's a Twitter fav.  But I was talking to my BIL over the weekend and, beyond my nephew loving him cause of my influence, he said that when they went to MSG for the Sixers game, he saw probably half a dozen kids in Kolek jerseys.

Owner Jim Dolan was interviewed on WFAN yesterday and he said he did not expect the team to make any trades before the deadline.

Those kids might have him in their Phonics class.
