Last March, in Columbus, I sat in my hotel after Marquette just won its first NCAA game in 10 seasons. Purdue had just lost to a 16 as a 1 seed.

Everyone had gone to bed, but not an extremely nice Purdue couple that had clearly seen a lot more basketball than me.

I sat silent with my drink. The gentleman, leaned over on his own and said "nice win." I said "sorry for your loss." without thought.
He leaned in again, instantly, and said "this is the worse night of my life."

Turns out, him and his wife were big Purdue regulars and boosters. They had supported Keadys elite runs, they believed in coach Painter, but was he the ultimate regular season winner but can't bring them the ultimate glory?
If you know Purdue, you know they are the image of sustained success without the massive glory...

His wife wanted Painter our, but he said painter earned that leash. He also said, and I quote, "I just wish we had Shaka"

I said "me too" and gave him a handshake.
