His fight with Hearns was one of the most exciting, brutal sporting events I've seen. He was a hell of a champion.

Fond memories of his era.

I live in Racine, but grew up and worked in Kenosha. Racine had cable; Kenosha did not. Most of the fights involving Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, etc. were on HBO then. So my house was the party house whenever there was a big-time bout. Not unusual to have 20 friends over for the fight.

I'd take Hagler over any of today's great middleweights.

Canelo Alvarez is on par with any of yesterday's. GGG is vastly overrated outside of general power.

Outside of them (really just Alvarez) you have to go back to Jones to find another middleweight at their level IMO.

Agreed, but he was also like 22 with his only future HoF victory over an aging Shane Mosley? He was in over his head and it showed. The Canelo that we've seen since he ran circles around Cotto is a different Canelo IMO.

I forgot about that. I like to believe him as there's been no other positives and Mayweather has drug testing rules that would've found something but it's a fair POV to have that the meat thing is a load of BS

He was still super green.  And Mayweather put no damage on him, even for Mayweather standards.  He got completely and utterly outboxed, that's without a doubt, but it's not like he got pummeled.

At that age, and stage of his career, Mayweather didn't have any "great" wins to speak of either.  1 or 2 wins over decent guys at the time, but nobody that stands up to any historical look back.  Nobody remembers Genaro Hernandez or Carlos Gerena. 

But the Canelo since then has been a freight train.  His last 3 fights especially have been really dang impressive.

Canelo is very good, don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't put him among the all-time greats until he at least beats a great. The 35-year-old version of Cotto doesn't count.
I'll agree that he was in over his head with Mayweather, but perhaps not because of age or inexperience. He was 23 years old and had 43 bouts under his belt at that point.
Sugar Ray was 23 with 25 pro fights when he beat Benitez, after all.

Honestly he spent too long sitting at welterweight and jr middleweight and should've made the jump to challenge Martinez before Cotto did and start working up to try to get a fight against Andre Ward. Now he's stuck in a weak middleweight & super middleweight division with a weak light heavyweight and weak cruiserweight division.

That being said I don't know anything about Billy Joe Saunders and about his potential staying power. I've heard some rumors about Terrance Crawford moving up so that could be a potential top opponent for Canelo.

One of the great attributes of that era was that no one style dominated. Some guys were clever an crafty and others were pure power. Also everyone fought each other at their absolute prime. The talent in boxing was deep in those days.
