Blown out at home by Louisville...Coach acting like a baby despite the fact that he was largely to blame....

I put this one in the Maine, Cincy (1995-96 or so) category.  Absolutely brutal.  Terrible coaching, preparation and effort.  Wow.  It was that bad.

I put this one in the Maine, Cincy (1995-96 or so) category.  Absolutely brutal.  Terrible coaching, preparation and effort.  Wow.  It was that bad.

It was Cincy 1995 under Deane....91-64.  Yes, that was even uglier that day, especially in light of the fact we we started the year 8-1 by blowing out Wisconsin and Ohio State but then lost to Temple and UWGB (at home)...two straight losses and we follow it up with almost a 30 point blowout to the Bearcats.  Yuck, that wasn't fun.

I'll throw a couple of others at home in there that I recall

70-43 to Ok State when KO was coaching
84-56 to DePaul when KO was coaching
55-35 to DePaul during Crean's first year

I think what makes losing to UL last night an extra kick in the pants is that WE JUST PLAYED THEM.  We played the same game, we lost the same way.  Didn't learn anything from game 1, maybe besides .. we're not as good as UL.

2.  1991 OT loss to Xavier, 98-93......MU was up by 5 points with about 10 seconds to play and gakked it away.

How about the loss to UW in December 1999?

Marquette scored something like ten points in the first half, and the arena was full with about 80% Wisconsin fans. 

I can still hear a Wisconsin fan yelling, "Hey Marquette!  You have ten points!"

I've hated UW since that day.

Memphis on Valentine's Day 2004 is a big one for me... Outside of hearing Doc's Warrior speech, that one was a big ouch.

I think you nailed it, Hilltopper.  It is a tough pill to swallow to get blown out twice in such a short stretch.  I think TC has really improved his in-game adjustments this year (Wisc, Duke, Cinci), but we didn't have an answer the other day.  TC was harping about the D after the game (which I agree...I saw some bad rotations), but the O was a mess against UL and his substitutions were not good.  I think we will rebound---UL is a great team with more talent than us.  Three observations if we play them again:

1.  We should try breaking the press like KO did with Tony Miller vs. Kentucky which is to have Mo or DJ speed dribble it straight down the open sideline lanes and get a quick shot in transition or a alley to Ooze or LH.  We kept trying to break the press in the middle, got bogged down and then set up for 30 seconds to settle for a forced shot.  Against UL (not all teams), I would have preferred a quick shot before they could set up their D (and have an open rebound lane), where we don't match up well in the half court (and our shooting % showed it again).  

2.  Start Ooze.  I don't get the 16 minutes thing.  We continually lose the tip, and then proceed to get behind early.  This is a pattern.  Ooze had good numbers in the few minutes he played, coming off a great game.  I know TC was not pleased with some of his rotations and his failure to block out on a FT...but, overall, am I missing something here?  What's going on or will this remain a mystery?  We are simply a better team with him in there--especially against a big UL team where we can use his mobility.

3.  Why aren't we pressing a big team like UL?  Our depth is at guard and small forward.  We pick up reach in fouls anyway and we didn't rotate well, so let's apply full court pressure instead getting ourselves into mismatches in the half court.  "Press a pressing team"

Worst home loss ever was December 19, 1981. Minnesota 76 MU 54. Back then members of the Tip Off Club got their names drawn out of a hat to be an honorary assistant coach. You got to sit on the bench and you were supposed to be able to go in the locker room at half time. Unfortunately in some box I have a plaque that says that I was the honorary assistant coach for that game.
Raymonds closed the locker room at half time, so I was not allowed to go in. It was not a positive experience.

We lost to South Alabama by 12 points at home in the pre-season NIT

I think the key difference with some of the losses rightfully mentioned (any losses in the Dukiet/Deane era, for example) is that this MU team is far more talented than the other ones.  Its one thing to lose when you suck, but I think most fans would say that we improved significantly from the Western Michigan debacle, which makes it harder.  Sometimes it doesn't look like there's been much progress.

I was at the game (unfortunately from an MU perspective, though watching Memphis go 18-of-36 on threes or something like that was pretty darned impressive). Yes, Doc Rivers did talk about always being a Warrior that night. Mo Lucas did the same thing on his night.

Not to nitpick, but there's no way that speech is from 2004. That game marked the 30th anniversary of Al's championship team ('77), and the court has looked like that only since 2005-06. Wasn't that Marquette day in 2007?
