Why? McNeal had the scoring record for, what, 8 years? Why is his number not retired?

Seriously?

Marcus is at 2700 points (and he isn't done yet), Jerel finished at 1985.

So a top 25 all time scorer vs a guy who scored a lot.

The difference with Jerel and Howard is Jerel was the programs all time scoring leader which is a great accomplishment. Howard is shooting up the record book with some truly all time great players in CBB history.

I'm undecided on retirement but the comparison to Jerel isn't really a good one.

And is doing it against much better competition than some of the other guys on the list.

Syracuse hasn't retired Lawrence Moten's number.  Boston College hasn't retired Troy Bell's number.  And BC doesn't exactly have a wealth of good basketball talent in their history.

I think the speed at which we retire Markus' number will be relative to whether or not Wojo stays.  If Wojo remains at Marquette, it'll be retired in the next year or two for program optics and reasons of general slurpiness.  If Wojo leaves, MU will retire it at some point, but may sit on it for a few years.

Were either of those guys 2X All-Americans and conference player of the year at least once?

Is it?  I went on BC's athletics website and he wasn't listed under "retired men's basketball" numbers.

I would also like to clarify that I'm not anti retiring 0. I should also say I think there are a few numbers in our rafters that should not be there.

I think it should probably just be Lee, Ellis, Kojis, GT, Wade and a banner for Al. I am a huge fan of Doc Rivers but his jersey doesn't belong up there. The others (Tatum, Meminger, Lucas) are debatable. All great! I just don't think they rise to that level.

No. 34 should be retired for the TSmith, Mac and Diener trio.

Mr. Sand-Knit

Maybe the dumbest question ever posed on this board.  Just think about that!

Yes. Team and conference scoring honors, great ambassador for MU, will graduate in May. If not him, then you shouldn't do it for anyone.
I'm fine with banner idea as opposed to "retirement" of the number.

Inconceivable that his banner is not in the rafters.

Not really.
