12-2..... 2-8
« on: January 11, 2020, 06:18:46 PM »
MU started last season 12-2 versus BE opposition. Marquette was in the lead at the under 4 against Nova w a chance to win a conference title.

Since then, the team has gone 2-8 versus Big East opponents. 1-5 including the BET to end last season and 1-3 to start off this campaign. MU also has as many losses in mid Jan as it did in early March last season, all while having an All-American candidate and leading scorer in the country. Talk about being within reach of the top of the mountain and having a major fall from grace.

Let’s hope it turns around soon and the guys can put together a strong end to the season in complete opposite fashion to last year.

***wojo diatribe below only read if you care to hear yet another opinion

I’ll preface this by saying that I am neither a Projoer or Nojoer- I think all that stuff is nonsense and I pretty much ignore any discussions on any of it.

If you hate wojo good for you, no one is going to change your mind except wojo himself if the team has an awesome year or makes a deep tourney run. If you love wojo good for you too, no one is going to change your mind except wojo if the team implodes repeatedly.

We are all Marquette fans and want the team to succeed. That to me means we all want Wojo to succeed and if you feel otherwise you’re a goofball. I’m not sure he has the chops to succeed but I definitely want him to- his recruiting is there and his peripherals and image stuff is what the university wants so he will get a longer leash- yes longer than the 5 year nonsense. That said, the results just haven’t been there thus far and everyone’s leash runs out at some point. Player regression (hello Theo?) when someone looks like they could become an all BE player is one of the major red flags.

Anyhoo sorry to ramble, we have enough of these silly threads.

***i moved my point to the top so no one has to read yet another wojo diatribe if they don’t want to***

Will take charity bets that we win our next 3 and/or make the NCAA tournament.

I do agree with a lot of the criticism, though.

They are the same bet. If MU does not win the next 3, there is no hope for a NCAA bid.

I hope you are right or this season will be over in January and that's a sad thought.

They quite possibly end making up the NCAA this year, but it will be based off college ball resembling high school ball around the country this season. To me, my eye test is showing me this is not a very good ball team at the moment and a lot of coaching will be needed to right the ship.

I would recommend the pro Wojo camp look for small victories before worrying about where we are ranked next a Monday or where  Lunardi has them seeded. This team needs to play a solid game against a good opponent and then build off it. Again, for those that want Wojo back, I would be focusing on finding out who can play next year and not living and dying with a bubble watch.

We all know Howard can score 50, but we do not know who is going to be counted on for next season. Do not count on a marginal players having breakthrough off seasons. Skilled ball players have breakout years, marginal players do not. FYI we returned marginal players this year, hence Cain or GE did not have breakout seasons.

Goose,

Wojo will be back unless he decides to go, which I doubt. He is not getting fired even if the team does not make any post season tournament.  I do think if we end up with a dumpster fire season the pressure will ramp up but he will get another year.

The Hauser’s leaving and his incoming recruiting class buys him at least two more years.

This season - “We can’t possibly blame the coach. Two of his key players left long after he could properly replace them!”

Next season - “We can’t possibly blame the coach. Freshman will be inconsistent and we need to be patient and wait to see their full potential.”

Buckle up fans. First stop mediocrity.

I think Wojo feels the heat and ends up taking any job he can get. Even he has to know that progress is being made and rapid speed and next year will be a tough one for the program. Always best to leave before asked to leave. Ask Buzz.

If we win 2 of the next 3 we will still be projected as a tournament team. 1 of 3 and yeah it gets dicey really quickly. 3 of 3 and we're back on solid footing.

False, utterly false.  These same dire predictions happened three years ago and were false.  Have to win 2 of the 3, do not have to win all 3.

You might be right this year Goose....but I'm pretty sure you've said this every season for the past 5 or 6 seasons. Is it possible that your eye test needs to be adjusted to today's game?

It’s all relative...if all of college basketball is down, teams are still competing at the same level as their peers.  Of course we all know it doesn’t resemble high school basketball.

I'm still committed to this years team, with an eye on next years. Regardless of the outcome this season, Wojo needs to keep developing guys like Brendan, Symir, and Dexter.  Koby, Jamal, Theo and Greg may be bench players midway through next season if not earlier, and not because they aren't good. If Mane commits It will be really interesting to see how minutes are allotted. It will also make me doubt the wisdom of canning Wojo more than I already do.
