Successful Book Drive Reaches Record Amount

Milwaukee - The Marquette University athletic department's School Children's Book Drive, organized by Women in Support of Marquette Athletics (WISMA), reached yet another record total this year thanks to donations made Jan. 12 before the matchup with Notre Dame.

The afternoon's activities collected around 1,500 books and nearly $2,400 in cash donations. The efforts were boosted by a donation of new books by Follett bookstore on campus. Several boxes of books were sent to nine schools in the greater Milwaukee area, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. Each institution also received a gift card in the amount of $300 and the types of books ranged from the classics to counting books.

The total of the cash donation surpassed each of the previous six years.

"I am very thankful to all of the people who cared enough to donate books or cash," Joani Crean said. "The event was a huge success."
