Dameon Mason update

Once touted as the possible second coming of Dwyane Wade when he arrived at MU in 2003, Dameon Mason instead has seen his college playing days ended after being declared academically ineligible at LSU.

Mason, a 6-foot-6 wing player, transferred from MU following his sophomore season. Yet after sitting out the 2005-'06 season - which just so happened to be the year the Tigers made a Final Four run - due to NCAA transfer rules, he never really materialized into anything more than a role player.

He averaged 5.4 points and 3.0 rebounds last season, then 3.1 points and 3.0 rebounds in seven games this season. Mason missed a portion of games earlier in the season, including the Maui Invitational, due to a viral infection in the muscles surrounding his heart.

Here's the full story in the Baton Rouge Advocate.

Also, I'll have some updates on Wednesday heading into Thursday's big game at Louisville.

For some interesting reading on the Cardinals, check out Tom Heiser's blog for the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Too bad for Ish.

Gotta be in bad shape to be declared academically inelligible at LSU.

I  sympathized with him when he had his heart problem, but frankly, if you can't get a 2.0 at LSU then you're acting like an idiot. As a fifth-year senior - who must be 23 years old by now - he should definitely know better than to screw around in the classroom. LSU is no Harvard and most high-level D1 athletes have outstanding academic support systems.

It's too bad as I think he would have become quite the player if he would have stayed.  I believe he cited wanting more playing time as the reason when he had already led the team in PT.  I realize the three amigos were coming in but I still think he would have seen decent minutes.

He had an impressive freshman year and improved on it his sophomore season.  Once he transferred, however, he seemed to regress.   It's too bad.

I agree.  But, if he were a star, he would've "miraculously" made the grade.  From the outside looking in, not only does he have trouble fitting into a system, but he has delusions of grandeur.  He's been transferring schools since High School.  His dad used to post on the old Rivals board.  Whenever someone would question his game his dad would email me and demand I delete it.

I completely agree with you on all accounts.
