Posted this on the other board, and curious what folks think here...

Trying to consider how these changes might impact MU:

3-point line extended back 20 inches to same as FIBA play: Clearly, Howard and Rowsey are not affected, but I doubt we see any threes by Sacar or Cain. Probably very few from Elliot. The big question is Hauser. How comfortable will he be another 20" out?

More, does it allow defenses to sag back a bit, since most players will not take those threes? So, does that help MU because we have two players that still need to be guarded tightly at the 3-pt line? Does that mean that an extended defense might provide more driving and passing lanes for MU? Let's hope so.

Free throw lane widened four feet to NBA regulation: I suppose the impact on the width of the lane is getting bigs to not linger too long in the lane on offense. Does it encourage teams to play zone defense since offensive players need to move further away from the basket?

Games of four, 10-minute quarters instead of two, 20-minute halves: Teams will shoot free throws after the fifth foul of each quarter: As a strong free throw shooting team, I suppose this could help MU. Is the double bonus in effect; if so, how and when? How does it change timeouts?

Shot clock resets to 20 seconds after offensive rebounds instead of 30 seconds: I like the idea of a shorter clock after an offensive rebound. Very much.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the NIT and for MU. Since I only see the first one having any significant impact on teams, and it's a net positive for MU, I think if works in our favor. MSG, here we come!

I'd have to say a lot of these changes actually favor marquette

Wouldn't this *not* benefit good-FT shooting-MU?   I mean .. if the other team fouls once every 2 minutes, then it'd be the 8th and 9th minutes where the next foul was a FT .. 2 mins * 4 quarters = 8 minutes "at risk".

Under current rules, if a team fouled every 2 mins, they'd reach the 7th foul in the 14th minute, so 6x2H 12minutes "at risk".

Hate the shot clock rule. Like the moving back of the 3 point line, as it will encourage less three point attempts.

Everything else is pretty meh. Doubt the widening of the lane will have any impact on the game.

Why don't you like the shot clock rule? It should benefit teams that play faster (like us) and be a detriment to teams like Wisconsin (and Harvard) that like to take the air out of the ball.

I hope the lane change will open up driving opportunities. May not be great for a jump shooting team like us, but will increase the overall entertainment value.

Impact on MU?

3pt line: Unless they're moving it back to the Al sticker, none.  If there was a 3pt% metric that adjusted for distance, I would be surprised if anyone was within 5% of Marquette.

Shot clock:  ORB% not so great to begin with, and pace of play doesn't seem to be something the team relies upon.

Quarters:  Like Wojo said, resetting fouls after 10 minutes?  Bring it on.

Lane:  If MU goes into the zone with a 16' lane, Wojo is going to look like the 2nd coming of Boeheim.  More space for Matty down low?  Yes, please.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

When will media timeouts be?
In what I could tell last night. 5 minute mark in the 1st & 3rd quarter. 7 & 3 minute mark in the 2nd & 4th quarter. End of the 1st & 3rd quarter. So, still 4 in each half.

If tonight is any indication, the deeper three point line really did seem to make a difference. Both teams missed a number of open looks. In general, it was a pretty ugly shooting game. Whether that was due to the change in the line or not, I'm not totally sure.

The change to quarters didn't seem to change things too much, but the free throws evening out sure was nice for once. I'd like to see that trend continue, personally.

Overall, I got the sense that MU struggled with a more open court, a further 3-pt line and wider lane. Maybe they just didn't play well, and I'm seeing it as a result of the rules changes, but the openness seemed to make guys second guess themselves (such as Heldt's pass when he could've shot) or try to do too much (such as Rowsey's failed wrap around pass).

I was assuming they'd feel comfortable in the Al, but they just didn't look at home. It might've been the rules changes, the new arena, the pressure of must-win or simply constipation. No matter what, it was ugly. Then again, they won and they continue.

I like the quarters because it kept teams out of the bonus - less foul shooting.

Not sure about the three point line or the wider lane.

mu_hilltopper

Not a fan of quarters.  My brain hurt in the 1st and 3rd, always having to add 10 to the clock.

That was probably an unfair advantage for the Harvard team, being better at maths.

I didn't like the uneven breaks. Okay, under 5 timeout, now it's 7 and 3, just bizarre. I did like the fewer free throws though.

The three point line seemed to hinder us early (started 2/7) but that came around and I liked the wider lane. My favorite of the new rules though is the 20 second shot clock after offensive rebounds. No need whatsoever to go back to 30 when 10 seconds are allotted to cross half-court.

I liked the rule changes; but did not like all the extra lines on the court; way too busy.

The breaks were weird. It made the game really choppy. If they move to quarters, I'm hoping they can find a better way to handle the media timeouts.

My suggestion is each under 5:00 and make the breaks between quarters longer.

But that will never happen.

SaveOD238

When we came out and missed the first few threes, Mrs. SaveOD pointed out she thought we had the "yips" from the three point line change.  I think I agree that the change didn't affect our ABILITY to shoot threes, but it might have messed with our MENTALITY.

Hopefully by game 2 they have that figured out

Suffice to say, this is one experimental rule change that will never see the light of the regular season.  IIRC, there was a media timeout with 0:36 left in a quarter last night... ugh.
