That's only a rule if you take the dh out of the game. I believe the rule is the same as in college. You can designate someone to bat for a fielder. It doesn't have to be a pitcher no?

Nevermind the dh must be used for the pitcher in the MLB.

But if the bat doesn't play he won't get to hit at all.  Not true in the NL.

Ehhh. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see whoever signs Ohtani to use him strictly as a pitcher.  Maybe let him pinch hit now and again, but I don't see them running him out there in the OF 3 days a week and pitching 1.

I think there are only a couple teams in MLB that would let him be a true 2 way player.

Disagree.  If that's what it takes for him to sign whoever gets him is going to give it a legit shot, otherwise it will be disingenuous.

I think the leader in ABs for pitchers last year was Greinke at 62. What's a good under/over for ABs for Ohtani in 2018, assuming no more significant injury? 150? 200? Does it move the dial much either way depending on whether he signs with an AL or NL team?

I would think so - DH is a much safer "position" to play than 1B or the outfield.

I think I'd put my money on the M's.  Strong history with Japanese players, west coast, vibrant Japanese community, and I believe Nintendo still has an ownership stake.  DH at bats to offer.  Not to mention the 2nd highest dollar allotment to offer of remaining teams.

But...who knows if any of that will matter.

Don't disagree with any of that.  However, they're also not in contention and going in the wrong direction, IMO.  Their best players are old, expensive, and trending downwards.
