Marquette's not alone in pairing high offensive efficiency with less-than-impressive results on the defensive end. A few comparisons, courtesy of Ken Pomeroy:

18  UCLA (P12)                24-3    AdjO 125.7 (1st)     AdjD 102.2 (117th)
20  Oklahoma St. (B12)    19-9    AdjO 125.3 (2nd)    AdjD 102.7 (130th)
27  Michigan (B10)           18-10  AdjO 119.8 (10th)   AdjD 101.4 (100th)
31  Marquette (BE)           17-10  AdjO 120.2 (8th)     AdjD 103.2 (138th)
33  Wake Forest (ACC)      16-12  AdjO 119.4 (12th)   AdjD 102.6 (129th)
46  Arkansas (SEC)           21-7   AdjO 117.8 (19th)   AdjD 103.6 (149th)

And here's where they stand in ESPN's latest bracketology predictions:

(4) UCLA
(6) Oklahoma St.
(9) Michigan
(10) Arkansas
(11) Marquette
Wake Forest (first 4 out)

Lunardi has us matched up with OK State in his latest.  This game would be nuts.  The casual observer would be very entertained.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Galway Eagle

Well Michigan kicker out a$$ so I can do without playing another high octane offense
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

MU82

The Golden State Warriors, of course.

Except we've got Markus Howard ... and they only have Steph Curry!

I think we are a totally different team since the UM debacle. More players can score now. Reinhardt was hurt too I believe that game

Rowsey played 1 minute in that game.  25 mins played by guys no longer on the team.

You left out VA Tech (30/115) and IU (29/107)

Maybe it's just the MU way these days?

No conspiracy;) Both are simply ranked outside the Top 25 in offensive efficiency.

Interesting, therefore to make meaningful use of the data I assume the leagues are of equal value and that each team has played games against teams of equal value.  Or I  weight the leagues and the games played or add a factor for the 3 or 4 games remaining based on the value of the remaining competition.

That is beyond my pay grade.

Al would say something like sea shells and balloons, I  would say something like apples and oranges.

How would you weight the officiating of the geographical location of each team?

Wow - the Hoosiers are "better" both offensively and defensively than the Hokies. But they're 15-13 and 5-10 in the 4th toughest conference while VPI is 19-8 and 8-7 in CBB's toughest conference.

Wonder which team has the better coach?

Was looking at Kenpoms luck ratings today and noticed that VA Tech was one of the luckiest teams in the nation and Indiana one of those most unlucky, about 25 slots lower than Marquette.

I thought this was answered years ago with "Hiroshima" leading to SLU!

Good coaching in close games can make their teams lucky or unlucky, don't you think?

Pomeroy studied this......says it's mostly luck...year to,year no correlation.....Buzz had incredibly lucky years at MU and also incredibly unlucky seasons as well. Iirc

Ps Buzz had terrible luck in 2014, was very lucky in 2013....very unlucky in 2011 for example

DonKojisAllStars

My ESPN Insider account comes equipped with information from TeamRankings & NumberFire. One comparison they have that I find interesting is similar teams historically. For this current Marquette team, they say our most comparable seasons are:

Michigan State Spartans [2005-06 Season] - 96.73% MATCH
Louisiana State Fighting Tigers [2004-05 Season] - 96.72% MATCH
Wake Forest Demon Deacons [2001-02 Season] - 96.35% MATCH
Florida Gators [2003-04 Season] - 95.66% MATCH
Baylor Bears [2007-08 Season] - 95.54% MATCH

MSU finished that season with a record of 22–12, 8–8 to finish in a tied for sixth place in Big Ten play. They received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year and lost in the First Round to George Mason.
