Charleston Southern seems to have issues with compliance.  The NCAA should have simply made the players pay back the amount they owed.

Comparing this to UNC is apples to oranges.

Definitely seems like an overreaction...unless it was made very clear to the players that the money provided for text books was to be used for text books and only text books. Actually, even if that was the case, you tell the kids to pay for the other school supplies (and electronics?) or return them. After that, schedule these young men for an early morning training session at the stadium with the strength coach.

The bookstore advised them to spend the money. Shouldn't the bookstore be suspended?

You believe everything the Charleston Southern book store tells you?

Comparing what they did is apples and oranges. Comparing the NCAA's reaction is not.

Your right it is like comparing someone who Jaywalked (CSU) to someone who tortured and murdered 100's (UNC).

My biggest gripe is that it's not like the guys took cash and left. They didn't use the money through some "campus-cash" loophole and spend it on pizza or whatever. They bought freaking school supplies with it.

Sounds like a pretty hardcore violation to me.  Knowing the NCAA, CSU will probably get the death penalty over some highlighters, while UNC gets a good talking to.....

That's because what they did was fundamentally very different, so comparing the reaction is useless.
