On February 19 a new film will be released about Jesse Owens called "Race."  It is about his winning of four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (and greatly upsetting Hitler).

Owens (Ohio State) won four golds in the 100, 200, Long Jump and 4x100 relay.  Recall that the silver medal in the 100 and 200 and a gold in the 4x100 went to Ralph Metcalfe of Marquette.

I'll be curious to see if Metcalfe/Marquette get a role or mention in this movie.  It was argued that Hitler could have viewed Owens as an aberration but two African Americans on the podium dealt a real blow to his argument of the superiority of the Aryan Race

The Baltimore Afro-American (August 8, 1936) and other newspapers spread the story that Hitler refused to shake Jesse Owens's hand or congratulate other Black medalists. In fact, during the very first day of Olympic competition, when Owens did not compete, Olympic protocol officers implored Hitler to receive either all the medal winners or none, and Hitler chose the latter. Whether he did this to avoid shaking hands with "non-Aryans" is unclear.

Privately, Minister of Propaganda Göbbels called the victories by Blacks "a disgrace." Ignoring censors' orders to avoid offending foreign guests with racist commentaries, the radical Nazi newspaper Der Angriff (The Attack) wrote on August 6: "If the American team had not brought along Black auxiliaries ... one would have regarded the Yankees as the biggest disappointment of the Games."

I saw a promotional cut-out at the movie theater, and I was wondering the same thing.

I finally saw Race over the weekend.  I enjoyed the film very much.  The wife and I made the kids watch and they ended up liking too and regretted resisting watching earlier.
There was a ton more behind the story of wining 4 gold medals in Berlin that I did not know previously.  (The USA team almost boycotted the '36 Olympics, Jesse's rivalry with Eulace Peacock was highlighted more so than Ralph Metcalfe, Jesse's friendship with German long jumper Luz Long that began during the '36 games among many other facts.)

For those looking for the Marquette mentions, during an NCAA Championship meet, they show Ralph Metcalf in a lane next to Jesse with MARQUETTE across his chest.  He's mentioned several times and they show him finishing second to Jesse in the 100m at the Olympics.

Yup... there is only background stuff....I dont think Ralph even has any lines
For more Metcalf stuff check Netflix (maybe Amazon ) for:

...."A new documentary titled Olympic Pride, American Prejudice shares the experiences of the other 17 African-American athletes "who defied Jim Crow and Adolf Hitler to win hearts and medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin."  ....
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
