BioMed Engineering and MCW partnership
« on: March 28, 2016, 11:57:36 AM »
As an engineering alum, got an email from the dean regarding a new partnership between the BioMed program and Medical College of Wisconsin. On the surface, I have to say it looks very compelling and when combined with the Exercise Science partnership between the PT school and the Bucks sets up some really really exciting opportunities for Marquette in this space. Below is the text of the email I got. Thoughts?

Dear Marquette Engineering alumni,

Following a thoughtful and thorough planning process of nearly two years, the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Biomedical Engineering will launch this coming July. We are excited to move forward with a collaboration that joins two nationally regarded programs into a single department focused on educating the next generation of biomedical engineers and elevating the region into a substantial source for medical treatments and devices that improve lives.

The Marquette-MCW Department of Biomedical Engineering brings together the engineering expertise of Marquette and the medical research, technology, and clinical expertise of MCW to provide an inclusive education model to train engineers, scientists, and physicians. The goal is for the department to become a top biomedical engineering destination for students and faculty from around the U.S., a regional epicenter for biomedical research, and a nationally recognized center for innovation in the field. We anticipate the department will grow into an international destination for research and industry partners working on the cusp of new technologies driving treatments for disease and injury. I invite you to visit our new website at mcw.marquette.edu.

An interim chair for the department will be named shortly. We will launch a national search for a permanent chair, and are identifying search committee members from both Marquette and MCW.  The search committee will be co-chaired by an individual from each institution.

I want to express my deep thanks to the members of the core planning and advisory teams, as well as numerous faculty and staff from both institutions who continue to serve on committees. Their time, efforts, interest, and commitment have been invaluable to the success of this endeavor.

As always, thank you for your support of Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering.

Kind regards,

Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean

I think its great that Marquette is creating inter-institutional programs with other schools.  It advances knowledge and hopefully cuts costs.

If it can overcome the internal politics, then more power to it.

These alliances are always a good thing. Anything that facilitates application enhances the in-class theory. Well done Marquette.

Now this is news we all can be proud of. While I might prefer a FF appearance to this, I do appreciate the impact this will have moving forward. Nicely done, MU.
