For Stephen Curry, There’s No Such Thing as a Terrible Shot
The NBA’s reigning MVP is taking—and making—more ridiculously long 3-pointers than ever

long 3-pointer with a lot of time on the shot clock is a terrible shot for almost every basketball player on Earth—except Stephen Curry.

There were 17 seconds left on the shot clock in a Golden State Warriors game this month when Curry pulled up from 31 feet. His heave from the Detroit Pistons’ halfcourt logo ended up looking like a layup. But the most remarkable thing about it was that Curry’s swish wasn’t all that surprising.

Curry’s newly extended range has huge implications for the rest of the league, including the San Antonio Spurs, who face the Warriors Monday in the first of four games between the NBA’s top title threats. Put simply, other teams must now defend Curry even when he’s 30 feet from the basket.

The thing about professional sports athletes is that they are so good at their craft, that they can do things that at all other levels are considered poor fundamentals.  Taking a 31 foot shot 7 seconds into the shot clock is a bad shot...unless you are Steph Curry.  Leaving your feet to pass over the middle is a poor pass...unless you are Aaron Rodgers.  Swinging at a marginal 3-0 pitch is dumb...unless you are Mike Trout.
