True road games by conference
« on: December 15, 2015, 01:17:05 PM »
I guess there was some chatter about the Big 12 being the best conference hands down this year, and John Gasaway tweeted the below...

True road games played so far by member teams:

SEC: 21
B1G: 19
ACC: 16
Pac-12: 15
Big East: 14
Big 12: 5

SWAC: 66

Kinda remarkable that the Big 12 has only played 5. Glad to see the Big East isn't lagging behind.

EDIT: Over/under on money generated by SWAC teams as a whole for buy games this year?

Pac-12: 15 - 1.25/team.....12 teams
Big East: 14 - 1.4/team....duh
Big 12: 5 - .5/team.....10 teams

SWAC: 66

On a per team basis the SEC comes back to the pack with B1G, Pac12 and us.

My guess (0 research/googles) ....$5M total

Digging deeper into the numbers, I like it!
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Ha, love how some SWAC teams have played at least 7 true road games...and that's used to recruit!

Certainly the cash they get for the program helps recruiting.  Plus the team gets to travel outside the SWAC, stay in motels overnight, and play in an environment they won't see anything close to during conference season.

Our one true road game is hurting the conference in this comparison.

Okay, I admit I'm missing this.  Are you saying that we didn't beat Wisco by enough to help conference RPI?

If this years game against UW was at the BMO we wouldn't have a true road game, the BE would only have 11 road games and B1G would have 20

I sat in a sports marketing class in 1997 and Bill Cords told us now important a 16 game home schedule was for the university athletic department.   At the time, it made all the sense in the world.  But now?  I understand expenses (salaries, facilities) have gone up but TV money has SKYROCKETED.   And I would bet donations have gone up significantly too.  This was in the final days of the Tip Off Club.   The big money was just being found.

So with a much difference model, why are we still operating on the antiquated 16 games at home model?

I realize much of the preseason is tourneys / challenges created by ESPN, etc but surely two year contracts for home and homes can still be done.

We aren't operating on that model, are we?  We'd have a great schedule with only 16 home games.  We have 19 this year.  If we replaced 6 of those buy games with home and homes, we'd have 16 home games and as good a schedule as anybody.  Just one less home game would mean two home and homes (one at home and one on the road).

My guess is that expenses have increased more than revenue has since 1997.

Very true. I forgot that two of our home games don't count as they are exempt due to FanDuel.  And guessing that the 19th was GVS.

We have 20 total home games this year in the package including the Valley City State exhibition.

Need to do percentages; otherwise, it's not a fair comparison.

SEC: 21
B1G: 19
ACC: 16
Pac-12: 15
Big East: 14
Big 12: 5

SWAC: 66

Bout 8 bucks per game over their travel costs.  Which is why Broecker seems to love them so much.
