I apologize if this post shines the light on my profound ignorance of MU history but MUScoop's logo has always baffled me.  After finally deciding to get to the bottom of it today I throughly searched through old threads and all I came up with was the following reference:

I just want to be on record saying that I'm terribly offended by the site's logo.  Don't think that I don't know where that image came from!   ;)

What?!?! Oh...that!  It's just an indescribable squiggle.  Kinda' like an ink blot test, you only see what you want  :P

Which did the opposite of clearing up my confusion as I still cannot see anything.  Yes, I'm a left brain guy (or whatever the non-creative side is).  Any help would be appreciated.

#1
warrior face. side profile. but of course that just an opinion ;)

it's nothing.. really.  just a scribble.. some people say the top part looks like a crayon and the trail below it is its mark.. others say someone peed in the snow, took a picture of it, and then edited it to make the snow blue.. have heard it's even a lasso.. probably the most ridiculous story I've heard is that it is the front profile of the old indian warrior mascot.. man people will see anything in this picture.
Once a warrior always a warrior.. even if the feathers must now come with a beak.

I thought it was lake Winnebago and the upper Fox River, an area soon to be known as MU country.

It is a portion of Marquette's former logo, sometimes known as the "First Warrior" logo.

The logo and name paid tribute to the proud and brave Native American soldiers and it is that logo that is overwhelmingly associated with the Warrior name. (I graduated in the early 90s and NEVER saw another until after the idiotic name change decision).

For some unknown reason, certain university bureaucrats -- and quite a few lemmings on this board -- have lapped up the idea that the name is offensive and cannot be separated from the logo.

Yes, that's right. In this day and age and under the direction of this administration, it's considered offensive to pay homage to Native American soldiers!

Thanks for waking me up!

Nice logo.  Like when you draw someone's face, you don't draw every line.  You just draw a few lines and then you fill in the rest with your mind.  I knew  the source of the logo, but never really appreciated the minimalist approach you guys took to make it. A subtle tribute to history there, without being offensive. So who's the design guy?

mu_hilltopper

If you're not a copyright lawyer, then I am the one who drew the MUScoop squiggle logo.   8)

Nope, MU dental school.  By the way, this is a great site.  You guys are doing a great job.

Thanks for the insight all.  I now see what we we're all referring to.

Actually from what I've seen, most of the people on the board who favor the golden eagle name do so because that's what it was while they were in school, that's what it was when they went to the final four, and that's what they connect with.  It has nothing to do with finding warriors to be offensive.  Dwayne Wade associates himself with the Eagle name, and I don't consider him a lemming.

I'll agree with you, and I'll take it one step further.

As the years have gone by,  I've heard older alumni (some crusty and bitter, some reasonable) whine about the nickname over and over and over and over and over and over... sometimes in person, sometimes on this board, sometimes in the media, etc. etc.

A lot of these alumni don't seem to have any respect for younger alumni and students "because we don't know the history" of MU because we weren't "Warriors" or whatever their reason.

I realize there is a lot of history tied to the Warrior name... but lets also respect the grads and students who were eagles.

I don't really care what the name actually is, but I definitely don't appreciate being looked down upon because of what the name was when I went there.

MU currently has so many things going well, can some of the older alumni talk about something other than "The name should still be warriors... blah blah blah"
