partial qualifier?

I thought partial qualifiers no longer existed, but it seems that St. John's Marcus LoVett has been ruled a partial qualifier and can't play this season.

Can anybody explain something that I was sure went away not too long after DWade was a partial qualifier?

Seems like he got a "partial approval."  I just learned something too....

I do not think the old Big East allowed partial qualifiers. I am not sure about the current Big East. I know it is not allowed in the Big 10.

Bilsu, it seems like the new Big East allows partials (partial qualifier, as in the original ESPN link, or partial approvals, as in the second link), since we're talking about a St. John's player here.

This is probably a good development for the kid. Can spend a year getting his academic house in order. Hopefully he can still practice and develop his game over the course of the next year. Should put him in a good position going forward.

I thought about that, but it would not surprise me if St. John's new coach is not aware that partial qualifies are not allowed.

There appears to be a similar situation at UW with Andy Van Vliet.  NCAA ruled that he was ineligible due to the fact that he enrolled in college "more than one year" after HS graduation.  The details are a little sketchy, but UW has appealed.  If they don't win the appeal, then Van Vliet will have to sit out this year and will have three remaining years of eligibility starting next year.  This could be under a completely different set of rules, though.

ESPN gets things wrong daily.

There is no such thing as a partial qualifier. You are a qualifier or nonqualifier.

There are partial waivers that can allow nonquals to get scholarship $, practice priv's, etc.

But.. partial qualifier? Doesn't exist.
