TAMU, Knower of Ball

Just finished watching the Viscenza game.

We averaged 18 turnovers per game in the first two games (per the announcers tonight). Way too many for playing teams below our skill level.

Against Vicenza, we had 25 by my count. 15 of those were Carter and JJJ (8 and 7 respectively). Duane had 3, Sandy/Henry/Wally had 2, Luke had 1.

We were clearly superior to this team but those kind of turnover numbers won't fly in the NCAA. Got tighten that handle up.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Agreed.  Still plenty to work on.  One thing to recall is the 24 second shot clock increasing the number of possessions.

I didn't get a chance to watch the 2nd or 3rd games but 25% (total guess) of the TO's in game one were because of the heat/sweat in the gym and it appears the game 3 gym wasn't much better.  Still, you are correct, way too many turnovers.

I could be making this up but isn't the international ball different than the U.S. ball?  Smoother perhaps.

**i honestly tried to phrase this in a way to limit the testicle jokes but i don't think that's possible

These were essentially Scion ProAm games, non รจ?

I think a lot of this is down to a freshman point guard, though this was definitely Traci's worst game from a turnover perspective. JJJ has been getting killed on those travel calls. It'll be interesting to see how those are called stateside, I think the Euro refs are a lot more touchy about that.

I do expect this to be an issue this year, but it is part of the growing pains of the new staff. These guys will have to grow into their roles. Hopefully we have the scoring and defense to overcome this. The past two years we've played ball control at the point. Derrick didn't turn it over much, but also didn't create as much offense. Before that, we had Junior, who created offense, but turned it over like he was making flapjacks.

Hopefully, Carter will grow into more of a Dominic James/Maurice Acker type player that could both create offense, score for himself, and not turn the ball over. It may take some time, and there will likely be quite a few bumps along the way, but that's part of playing a freshman at the point.

Probably 3-5 of the turnovers were due to the slippery ball.  The international ball IS much more slippery than the US college ball, especially when wet with sweat.  We used to intentionally take new leather Molten (that's the brand) balls outside on concrete for a couple hours of play to make them less slippery.

Agreed, but it is August. So I am not worried - yet.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Traci is an instant upgrade at the PG position over what we had the last two years. I will take excess turnovers and growing pains from a frosh as long as he is in constant attack mode with the ability to create offense for others and himself while keeping the defense on its heels. Really looking forward to the next four years of the Carter regime.

Assuming what we're seeing now will translate, he'll be an upgrade over Derrick, Junior, or Buycks.

Junior and Buycks needed to be guarded honestly and were able to put pressure on opposing defenses. That is the bare minimum I want to see out of a PG. Thankfully we have that again.

These are scrimmages and people are breaking it down like the Zapruder film.

But there was only one turnover in that film

The Carter term is going to be a good one.

I was more worried about our defense.  To borrow some soccer terms, we had trouble marking up and staying goal side.

You seem very educated on the hell of slippery balls and how best to manage this nightmare

Carter's turnovers did not bother me that much, because a lot of them happen trying to throw long passes on fast breaks. Either he will improve at that or we stop trying to do that. JJJ's turnovers bother me a lot. He is one of our more experienced players and if he has not learned good fundamentals by now he should be left on the bench. Duane also has too many turnovers.

bilsu

JJJ played the best I have ever seen him play today.
