Wednesdays with Wojo

Pretty generic, as is typical with Wojo, but at least it is basketball related.

Don't get me wrong I love Wojo but does anybody sort of miss the weird random answers Buzz would give us? It was like deciphering the davinci code! I wasn't there for Crean so maybe that's why it's strange for me.

After listening to buzz all of those years, I started to anticipate his catch phrases, knew his life story, could interpret buzz speak.   But I was still entertained.    Wojo just does generic coach speak.   Very disciplined.  Never off script.   But, he can boring-cliché me to death if it turns out he can coach as well as he can recruit.

I said this when MU released the basketball video introducing the freshmen.  Wojo really doesn't say anything interesting.  Coach speak and platitudes.  But I'm with tower...as long as the dude can coach, I don't really care.  I'm just not gonna listen to stuff like this.

Yes, it is always good to be entertained by pure BS.

I felt the freshmen video was actually pretty insightful. He talked up a few guys and laid out real expectations. Such as being a big contributor next year, etc.

The discrepancy between his buttoned down demeanor in publicity videos like this and his in game attitude is amazingly vast.

But he said that about everybody.  "Big contributor," "work hard," "good kid"....  I'm sorry but to me that's not terribly insightful.

The only times I have got some interesting stuff was on the radio show with Homer.  Especially when they took listener questions.  There were some tough questions that Homer selected and Wojo had to answer those without the usual coach speak.

Other than that, though, yeah predictably boring non-answers.

Lets be honest here, no coach is ever very insightful about his players.  Sometimes Buzz would use his podium to incentivize a guy like Davante.  Not sure that ever worked.  Otherwise, Buzz was almost devoid of talking about individual players.  Sure, he was entertaining talking about himself and life.  Then again, there was totally nothing in regards to insight about the team or BB in general.

I don't disagree with that.  I simply said I'm not going to do much listening because it isn't terribly interesting to me.

That's the fine line with this stuff.  The videos being produced are marketing really, they are generated to get fans interested in the product.  If the coach isn't saying anything interesting whats the point of creating the content.

I'm perfectly fine with what Wojo says and I don't believe they "owe" owe us anything, but like you it doesn't really interest me then.....which leads to the question, why bother?

Speak for yourself, Doc. I, for one, believe that Wojo owes the men of Scoop. He is what he is because of us.

Most talk from coaches AND young kids who are being recruited is the same - predictable and essentially nothing.

Maybe it's better that way. But for those that hang on every word, you're going to let your mind mislead you.

Coach Wojo owes Scoop nothing.
He does owe the MU community a well-coached, game-ready, competitive BB team to take the floor this fall given what he is paid and the resources at his disposal. Nothing he has said or done thus far makes me think he will do otherwise.

Obviously you aren't aware of the power of Scoop and its role in guiding the destiny of our beloved Marquette Men's Basketball program. Wojo does nothing, nothing I tell you, without first consulting Scoop. To do otherwise would be foolish and to his great credit he has come to realize that.

The best way to describe Wojo's interaction with fans is "Sterile".  He basically says nothing.  I enjoyed listening to Buzz even though he did go off the deep end a couple times.  I felt like he was at least somewhat of a throw back to Al, doing crazy things like the dance at WVA and then apologizing for it.  Wojo doesn't have to go as far as Buzz but I'd rank him behind O'Neill and Deane and maybe even close to the dreaded I4 as far as what he says and how he says it.
And yes while he can get somewhat of a pass on fan interaction if he wins it is part of his job to boost support through fan interaction.  Part of the reason a coach gets paid millions of $$ is that there are a lot of facets to the job and being a personality the fans want to hear from is one of them.

coaches get paid millions to win...you can be a pretty big prick and keep making millions if you're winning.
