Why Do Guards Drive People Crazy Around Here?
« on: February 03, 2015, 09:13:54 PM »
I've been here for several years and I've seen a number of posters lose their mind over Guard play and get banned

NoMoreBuycks = Dwights Buycks
Warrior65 = Vander Blue
Ners = Derrick Wilson
(there was another that really got on Junior Cadougan case but I cannot remember his name right now).

What is it about guards that get people vitriol going?  When Jamil Wilson struggled last year, I did not see posters lose their mind and get banned.  Ditto Otule, Jimmy Butler or Steve Taylor rough patches.

Do you agree that guards, and in particular point guards, get the juices following more than any other position?  If so, why guards?  Why do forwards and centers get a pass?

Guards are like Quarterbacks or Pitchers. They handled the ball on every play and thus everyone has a point of view on them.

Well, and one step further, college basketball is a guard dominated game, and often they are the ones making the critical decisions late in games that determine outcomes of many games.

I just don't know if I agree they get slammed here more than other positions, I suppose that's pretty accurate.

Dwight Burke got his fair share of bashing while he was here

I agree that guards get the bulk, but Merritt used to get clobbered on the previous MU boards.  And Fitzgerald was spared no insults either.

We also have quite a few very successful guards in our past to compare them to. Wade, Diener, James, McNeal, and DJO are all fresh in the minds of Marquette fans. As is often noted, it's a guards' game. When those guards are the basis for comparison it's easy to criticize.
