As usual you can not play 3 on 5, it is to bad Derrick and Juan just are not good enough to help this team on the offensive side.  In saying that, no one else has really stepped up on a consistent basis to help Carlino.  It will be nice next year not having those two, but losing Carlino might be a bigger lose then I thought.  Unless Wojo finds somebody else, it might just be the
Henry Ellenson show as he can go inside and outside.  They will need one of the new guards to step in right away to play as well.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

While they both had rough games last night (Juan especially) it is nothing like playing 3 on 5. Derrick had six assists last night (just shy of half of the team's assists) and Juan is still a threat to score. He just happens to be in a bit of a slump right now. And its not like Wojo hasn't responded. Juan played less minutes last night than he has in a game all season. Derrick also played the least amount of minutes in the conference season. If they continue to slump and the younger players can step up, playing time will be redistributed.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

bilsu

Only two players scored in the second half against Creighton.

Did anyone else notice that Derrick was never open last night. Every time Derrick had the ball St. John's put pressure on him. I do not remember another game where Derrick was so well covered. I think St. John's was hoping he drive to the basket like he usually does. Basically St. John's pressured all of the outside players knowing that the shot blockers would stop anyone that got by.

GooooMarquette

Derrick had 6 assists, 3 TOs and 7 rebounds last night.  Would've had 7 assists if Luke would have dunked it instead of waiting for Obekpa.  But yeah, he gives us no help.

Not sure we have anybody on the bench who can give us 7 boards and a 2:1 A/T ratio on a "bad" night.  Duane's current A/T ratio is 1.3/1, and he doesn't have to bring the ball upcourt, deal with the press or start the offense.

LAMUfan

He also got mauled across the arm during that strip in the back court from Sir' Dominic (gonna miss that dudes name next year), so could of been 2 turnovers

OK, there are other parts of there game that have improved over the years, but seriously you can not have 2 players on the court at the same time who really do not look for there shot, mid-major
type of players, can not win in these situations and they do not.  Yes the D is very good this year, but offensively it has been the same for 2 years now.  Hard to even watch.  It has been a struggle.

I would agree that Marquette has been playing 3 on 5. Unfortunately, aside from Carlino, it's anybody's guess as to who the other 2 might be on any given night.

Exactly.  I think what Wojo is doing is starting the traditional five, and then figuring out who is going to step up on a given night.  Last night it was Taylor and Cohen.  The problem is no one is terribly consistent from night to night except Carlino so who knows who it will be on Saturday?

Is there an advanced statistic for "quality" assists? I'd like to weed out those assists that result just from simply making a pass around the perimeter and the recipient doing the heavy lifting--either draining a contested shot or driving in traffic (kind of like a QB completing a screen pass and the RB taking it to the house from 50 yards out). I've never thought of Derrick as a prolific passer, so I'd be curious to see how that (mythical?) statistic applies to his assists.

A quality assist is one that results in 2 or 3 points for your team.  If you want to get any more complicated than that, we'd also probably want to call it an "assist" when the passer gets it to a guy in great scoring position, but the recipient fumbles the pass or misses the shot.  That happened at least once last night.

John Stockton while being on his home court, assures you, every one of his assists was of quality.

Okay he had more non quality assists than anyone else on the team. ;D

Just a quick follow-up on MU's offensive inconsistencies...

MU has had 6 of the 8 current scholarship players score 20+ points in a game this season while also having 5 of the 8 current scholarship players shut out in a game (with 10+ minutes played). The 3 who haven't been shut out have a low of either 1 or 2 points in 20+ minutes.

Which players haven't hit 20 this year?  And what are their average minutes per game played?

Also, I will say that for the minutes Derrick plays, his high level of touches, and his crippling inability to score, isn't it just kind of expected that he'll get 3 or 4 assists a game just by the sheer nature of touching it almost every possession and making an elementary pass?

Juan and derrick are what they always are....Useless take up spacers, why do we keep discussing this??
