Marquette is way ahead of Wisky Lutheran in terms of political correctness.  20 years ahead.

I would argue just the opposite.

What's offensive 'bout Willie?

Change the mascot, not the name.

I agree. But the fault is our own. If we didn't make a racist mascot, we would still be the Warriors.

Very few like the Golden Eagles, but the overwhelming love Warriors.  Not the old Warriors, but any non offensive type of Warrior would do.  We love the name "WARRIORS!!" period.  Clearly their are non-offensive type of Warriors as you stated yourself.  What exactly is the MU Admin fearful of with using Warriors?  Is it some buffoon flashing a Willie Wampum poster on national TV or something?

21st Century PC.   The 60's were the ERA of Disney and Howdy Doody. The giant head was the way mascots were portrayed. No racism intended and nobody considered it as such. Mascots are intended to instill pride in one's group so why would they demean the very symbol of that group?

Nobody. Too bad we used this instead

You are being deceptive. Willie wasn't used since 1971. There was no mascot from 91-94. In 1994, it was just the warrior logo, which some may still take offense to, but by no means was it the Willie caricature.

Even though Willy wasn't used, there were students and alum who would wear indian imagery.  Even though it wouldn't be university approved, I don't think the university wanted to be associated with that imagery. I agree that Warriors the name was fine, but the mascot wasn't.  However, some (not all, not even most) people had a problem letting go of the mascot, so it get dumped all together.

wadesworld

Does anybody have the website to the Warriors shirts that were being sold?

Disagree.   That mascot was long gone replaced by the 'first warrior', which is the symbolic warrior that was objected to by our president and led to the name change.

You do realize that Willie was retired 23 years before the BOT changed the nickname.  MU eliminated Willie after Wounded Knee.  The NCAA didn't give a damn until it became cool to give a damn (90's?).  Marquette was so far ahead of the curve, we received no credit.

To say "nobody" considered willie racist is likely not very accurate.  It's just that people didn't listen or didn't care.

If Marquette would have dropped the use of ALL native imagery at that point, MU would likely still be Warriors.  But they tried to keep native imagery "respectful," and it never worked.

Wadesworld--- A man named Sean Miller was selling Marquette Warrior T-Shirts with Wojo Warriors on the
back. It is Gildan brand. He also had hooded sweatshirts. I have one. Think he had a space on
"Hangin' at the Al". Recall he was from Waukesha.

I am well aware that Willie was retired long before the name change. But Willie was the worst of the worse. I know for a fact that our history with Mr. Wampum was one of the main factors in the decision to change the name. The administration was trying to sweep the past under the rug. Without Mr. Wampum, the past doesn't look so bad.

I have no issue with getting rid of Willie.  MU got rid of him because it was the right thing to do.  I think Marquette was so far ahead of public opinion that we received no credit for dumping Willie.
