Marquette close to hiring a women's basketball coach

By Michael Hunt of the Journal Sentinel

Interim athletics director Bill Cords said Monday he hopes to have a new women's basketball coach onboard this week.

Marquette has been searching since April 9 for a replacement for Terri Mitchell, whose contract was not renewed after 18 years as the Golden Eagles' head coach.

"We're hoping to get something decided by this week," Cords said. "There has been a lot of interest. We've been impressed by the quality and the depth of the pool.

"We want the best coach for Marquette University. Terri had success here and we want to continue to be successful."

Mitchell's teams won 348 games made post-season play 15 times, but the Golden Eagles never advanced beyond the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Former men's basketball assistant Jerry Wainwright has been caretaking the women's program during the past two weeks.

The new women's hire will be the third coaching appointment for Cords since he took over on an interim basis on Jan. 1. Women's volleyball coach Ryan Theis was hired in February. Cords also led the search committee that brought in men's basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski on April. 1.

"That's why I'm here," Cords said. "It speaks well of the program that we've been able to attract quality coaches."

Cords, who served as MU athletics director for 20 years and retired in 2007, has agreed to stay on through next spring. He was brought back by interim president Father Robert Wild after Larry Williams was forced out in December.

Says a lot about his professionalism and loyalty to have taken on these roles during the transition periods of both men's and women's programs this year.   I'm sure he's not hurting for money and he's accomplished enough he could have easily perceived and made it known these roles were beneath him.

Coach Wainwright is a pro's pro.

Jerry's a team player. I think he appeciated the chance to be working closer to home and is showing that back to MU. As much as i disliked him as DePaul's coach, i think he is a great asset to Marquette as a whole.  And the kids seem to like him and his love of the hippity-hop music they like these days.

Agree with everything you said, but I'm pretty sure he's from North Carolina so being closer to home probably wasn't a big incentive for him to come here.

IIRC, his wife and kids are in Chicago.

Jerry was born in Illinois and coached high school in the Chicago suburbs.  I think his wife and kids (and grand kids) are in the area.

He does have family in North Carolina as well.

Class act and nice to have as part of our program.  Could spin some insights on Buzzo's last year here, no doubt, that could be interesting.

And there it is, albeit slightly different: " I'm going to maximize the moment and enjoy the process."

Really, what is the purpose of this post other than to defame yourself?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Is Jerry Wainright auditioning for the AD job??

Hmmm, maybe elevate Mike Broeker to AD and Jerry to asst AD..., ala Jack Harbaugh only with more legitimacy.
