I'm curious. What aspects do you judge when evaluating the coaching candidates for the Marquette job. Here's a list of 10 possible factors. Rank them 1 through 10

Resume-What is his record? What is his postseason success?
Recruiting-Who has he attracted to his program?
Development-Do his players get significantly better in his system?
Playing Style-Is he exciting and fast tempoed? Or does he slow things down?
Player Relationships-Do the players like playing for him?
Ethics-Does he play the game right? Is there any baggage?
What our players think of him-Will the cupboard empty? Or are they staying?
Assistants-What coaches come with him?
Recruits-Can he steal any recruits from his old school?
Loyalty-Is he our long term coach? Is he bolting for a blue blood right away?

For me it is:

1. Ethics
2. Development
3. Recruiting
4. Player Relationships
5. What our players think of him
6. Resume
7. Loyalty
8. Assistants
9. Playing Style
10. Recruits

I think this list could vary depending on the school. I think for Marquette, we need to keep recruiting at a high level as our first priority. This is my major hangup with Martin. On the other end, I value playing style least. If we are a slow paced team that plays great defense and competes for the BE championship every year, I think I could get on board with that. I don't care how we win as long as we win.

Not to take a shot at you TAMU - but I noticed your top 2 priorities were two of the worst areas during the Buzz Williams era, a man you strongly defended on this board and still do.

I also defend Tom Crean.

I defended his choice of playing time. And I have received more information since the season ended that have lead me to change my opinion on that.

But you make a good point. I am reacting in a fairly typical way. I am looking at what the last coach was bad at and immediately put it as a priority.

But again, I'd still argue his positives for my alma mater far outweighed his negatives.

I think it was Topper who said that basketball is essentially a marketing tool for the university.  Marketing is, in a sense, a form of advertising.  The goal of advertising is to make some target audience aware of your product's existence.  The product that MU produces is education and accordingly, the target audience is students.  And if the BOT is adhering strictly to the mission that they laid out, then they will be looking for increasingly better students.  Flutie Effect on steroids.

That in mind, I think it's most fruitful to work backwards.  Let's reverse engineer what our priorities should be.  If basketball is truly a form of marketing, then this coaching hire should be treated no different from any other marketing strategy.

Obviously we are a Jesuit school so ethics should be priority number 1.  From there, I don't really know the order of the other attributes on the list.  I would need to think about it more.  This is a good topic.

Maybe the search committee is seriously considering Martin because he will be the antithesis of Wisconsin and Bo Ryan.  You want to redshirt as a freshman, play snooze fest basketball, and forced to develop a 3pt shot, then go to Wisconsin.  But if you want to play up-tempo, in-your-face basketball, with occasional alley-oops, come to Marquette.  That way we retain the "coolness" factor that Cohen and Noskowiak cite for MU being their dream school.

These are some preliminary thoughts that are somewhat incoherently strung together.

I don't want to derail this thread but I have to point out that the ethical standards of the Catholic church and the Jusuit segment of the church throughout history would make even the most questionable college basketball coach look good.

Keep in mind you can say that about most institutions where power can corrupt.

Must have the word "Howland" somewhere in their first or last name.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Jamie Dixon was mentioned as being in town. True or not.Like Dixon or Howland.

My priority is a coach who has a deep understanding of what it takes to win at the highest level and has the personal leadership qualities to make it happen.

After last night's events, TB would be the only hire that would really register in the state.Would be a great hire, but seriously doubt it'll happen.
