Seems a bit a rush to hire a new prez to get a coach on board. Not sure if the scoop agrees, but now we all know that my bball is bigger than any coach, but is marquette university bigger than mu ball?

The last hire of pilarz was seriously bungled. I'd hate to to see te school do the same thing again just to get a coach of some sport.

Or am I over concerned and the new prez was a great candidate? (Who happened to be local and not a Jesuit?)

He's just the president. It's not like he has to coach the inbound pass or anything.

They didn't rush the hire. They moved up the announcement. Two different things.

Time will obviously tell. Looking at his resume and all the things he did to improve UWM in his short tenure as chancellor makes me believe it will be great for MU. I'm guessing he was their choice some time ago but they moved up the announcement for...Shaka? Who knows.

And I agree, respect the process...enjoy the ride. We don't know what's going on now until it all is fully settled.

JoBo2756

I didn't realize they already had the candidate selected.

Regarding respecting the process, they blew it last time, so respectfully, I have lost respect for their process.

Relax.  First non-jebbie for a president.  (There aren't that many around anymore, which partially explains the Pilarz hire.)  This decision was made after a lot of consideration, they just moved up the announcement.

agreed, Goose-
solid.
everyone I talk to at UWM thinks ML is a good catch for MU- hating to see him go.

They only rushed the announcement. Solid hire.

Yep.  He was already in the envelope, they just opened it sooner.  Great mobility by the BoT if anything.  Hopefully sends a strong message to candidates, that if we can mobilize our oversized BoT to move up the announcement of the President because of basketball, we're pretty serious about it.

No issue.  Probably only advanced the announcement, not the process or decision.  Obviously been in process for some time and MU was actually very close to decision in the week of our BE title run.

He would be an upgrade over Bazz in that respect.

mu_eyeballs

I have an email dated 10/21/2013 asking for MY input on the search process(I am sure all of you have the same one)...five months seems pretty reasonable for a search and on top of that the reviews seem great on the hire.

NOT rushed at all.

mu03eng

Time will tell of course, but the hire looks very solid on paper and while brief I liked his demeanor and interaction with the press during his introduction yesterday.  I think he is going to be a facilitator and someone that can bring the diverse constituencies together to move MU forward.

They chose the wrong guy last time. You need to get over this idea that MU is run by a bunch of incompetents. Even the best process will lead to wrong decisions, and rarely is anything black or white.

Moving up the announcement proves how important basketball is to Marquette University. It's EVERYTHING.

Exactly.  See this

http://www.marquette.edu/leadership/presidential-past-news.php

The process started back on October 3 and notice the numerous updates.  The semi-finalists were interviewed on March 10 (which I assume were Kearney and Lovell) and the decision was made soon after that.

They knew who it was and the process was not rushed.  All that changed was the formal announcement and BoT approval.  Both of these were going to happen anyway.

Coleman

They already wanted this guy long ago. I think he's a solid hire.

Zombie45

The search for the new pres. had zero to do with the BB coach. It started 6 months ago.
