I'm talking about "established" names here... along the lines of Shaka, Marshall, Howland, etc.  Somebody who has been to a Final Four recently and has shown he can get it done on and off the court.

This does not include guys with recent success like Archie, coaches with prolonged but middling success like Mike Brey, or "assistant-coaches-in-waiting" like Hopkins, Capel, Chew, etc.

With that said... Buzz was slated to make nearly $3M this upcoming season.  (Numbers are arbitrary, but relative.)

Option A, "The Kitchen Sink":
(minimum salary $2.5M/yr, maximum $4.0M/yr)
Throw whatever you can at the new coach.  $2.5-3.0M a year plus performance incentives that max out at $4.0M total salary, 10 year contract, multi-million school buyout but no "protection clauses" (i.e. school pays multi-millions to buyout the coach's contract, but no buyout for coach if he departs), etc.

Option B, "Golden (Eagle) Parachute":
(minimum salary $3.0M/yr, maximum $4.5M/yr)
Basically, option A + an extra 500k/yr but with a punitive coach's buyout... something like IU's fabled $18M golden parachute should Crean leave.

Option C, "Base with Incentives": (minimum salary $2.0M/yr, maximum $4.5M/yr)
Base Salary of $2.0M.  Performance bonuses that max out at an additional $2.5M for a Natty (total salary of $4.5M), $2.0M for Final Four, $1.5M for E8, $1.0M for S16, and $500k for NCAAT bid.  7-10 year contract, minimal or no buyout clauses.

Option D, "Commission": (minimum salary $1.0M/yr, maximum $6.0M/yr)
Base Salary of $1.0M.  Performance bonuses that are 200% of what's listed in Option C.  5-7 year contract, no buyouts.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Skatastrophy

I've got about $1500 I suppose I could spare out of my monthly budget. I'm not sure I can get the wife to agree to this, though.

This. MU has the money, why not use it. Its not like we have a football program to worry about.

You realize that might come with an "out" clause that puts us right back where we are today in a few years.  You still good with an impact hire that could depart in a few years?

Get the guy and then find way to keep him. Always a chance any guy can leave. Roll the dice on keeping a stud any day of the week.

MU has no choice. Either they pay big bucks and hope they chose wisely, or they run the risk of becomin' Loyola.

You realize that for that kind of money, we could buy ourselves an audioanimatronic Al.  Frankly, I'm with you on paying a guy like Howland or Shaka whatever we can to get him here... I'm just worried about what it's going to cost to keep someone here.

Without a president/AD, MU is probably going to have to "pay" more in some terms upfront.

That said, not having football, helps much more when you don't have an AD/President. Let's face it, the most powerful person at MU is the Men's Basketball Coach.

Exactly.  Smart, Howland and Marshall will likely expect to make roughly what Buzz was getting, maybe even more.  They are the hottest names at the moment and know that they will have other offers if they wait.  They will also expect some premium for the uncertainty.

If we are tired of being a "stepping stone" we will have to pony up for one of these guys.  I don't think we should grossly overpay for anyone, but it's going to take a really good offer to get one of these three.

Now we hit true fandom ... spending other people's money.

Tell you what, if Scoop can raise $100,000 for the AD to apply toward the coaches salary, then this thread has some merit.

any takers?

Not entirely.... I'm contributing to Blue and Gold every year, even though it's under the guise of scholarships, you better believe I'm upping my contribution next year in appreciation of this hire.
