When asked about Buzz Williams' decision to leave Marquette for Virginia Tech, college basketball analyst Dan Dakich said it seemed to him that Williams was running from a job rather than to one.

In his view, Williams was reacting more to a push than a pull.

"Buzz is smart," Dakich said Saturday during a telephone interview. "In this day and age, win. If there is any difficulty at all, and I don't know if there is or isn't, if you feel it slipping or you feel like you are butting heads, then get out. I'm the poster child for that. I stayed way too long at Bowling Green. Went to West Virginia. Came back. Thought I was going to reinvent the wheel. I think it is a great move by Buzz. Apparently there is something there that made him leave. Whatever that was, if you can get out ahead of the posse, get out ahead of the posse."

Dakich was asked if he thought coaching in the ACC, even in the bottom tier, rather than the new Big East, played a significant role in Williams' decision.

"When you make a decision like that, everything comes into play," Dakich said. "Everything is a body punch. There are a few knockout punches. Salary. Maybe TV opportunities. So absolutely I think that (conference affiliation) would come into play. Because think about what he is doing. Think about the dramatic shift to where he's going. He's going from an urban setting where it was kind of set up for him. Now he going to a place where it's a rural setting. He's really taking a culture leap. Not backwards step, just a 180-degree turn. When you do that, that tells me you are unhappy with a lot of things, your current employer. Or, as I say, you are just trying to get out before they get you."

Can Williams win at Virginia Tech?

"You know, Seth Greenberg did a really good job there (2003-'12) and I think the people of Virginia Tech figured that out after Seth left," Dakich said. "It's a deal where you have to be creative in your recruiting. You have a couple of advantages. You have a really nice campus. You have an area where you have a ton of players fairly close to you. Now, I don't know how many kids in Virginia or DC or any of those prep schools wake up going, 'I'm dying to be a Hokie and play basketball.' Basketball is really good in that area. You are probably third right now in your own state behind Virginia, VCU. And Richmond, maybe, I don't know.

"I think Virginia Tech got really lucky to get Buzz and I think Buzz probably, looking down the road three to five years, feels pretty lucky to get out," Dakich said.

Yep--if VT got lucky with Buzz, then they like the manure spreading he will bring. Hope they enjoy the show. Hear Blacksburg in coal country is a garden spot.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Yeah, I rarely ever see VT games broadcast here in DC....

Am I the only one that reads this as a former coach applauding a peer for outrunning the posse?

Dakich basically says that things were getting hot for Buzz.

Yep. Va Tech has no presence in DC. Sometimes I see a hat, but that's about it.

Yep that struck me as well.  He sure didn't make himself look like much of a man with those comments.

Dakich is a major league tool but that's for another discussion.

Are we done seeing the generation of coaches who will stay for lengthy periods of time at the helm?

When Coach K, Boeheim, and Izzo/Donovan (~20 years each; be a little longer for them) hang it up, I don't think we'll ever see such long tenures in the near future.

Or will we?

I had thought Buzz would be a guy synonymous with the program and be a longevity coach. I was wrong.

Here's the list of coaches with the longest tenure, not necessarily at one place:

Dakich knows no more than we do but this could be read as Buzz was "encouraged" to leave and needed to in a hurry.

It also reads like Dakich is rationalizing a decision he doesn't understand.
