disappointing stat line.
« on: March 04, 2014, 09:57:21 AM »
Here are the stats for one of our player's numbers:

21 games
231 minutes played
22-66 FG for 33.3 %
2-13 3pfg for 15.4%
11-18 FT for 61.6%
0.3 spg
0.5 apg
2.9 rpg
2.7 ppg

Who is this?  Steve Taylor jr.  For all of the talk about how offensively challenged some of our other players are, STJ is the worst.  A forward should never shoot 33.3%!  Now, apparently he was not healthy either initially or all season.  If true, he should have redshirted because his production is clearly subpar.  Being hurt is not an excuse for shooting this poorly.  For all the #freestevetaylorjr talk last year, this year he either needs to step up his game or sit.

He does sit.

This is correct. He has struggled mightily on both ends this year, and being hurt most assuredly is an excuse for doing so. Just hope that is in fact the reason for it.

33% is especially bad when you consider how many looks he gets that should be simple power layups.  Steve has a great ability to find the seams to get the ball down low for what should be easy buckets, he just can't seem to convert this year.

Off the top of my head I seem to remember him doing better at scoring the last two games.
Am I wrong ?

Steve's numbers are not good this year, but he is one of several in that boat. Dawson, De. Wilson, JJJ, Anderson and so on. Haven't given up yet, but the real problem will be next year, because he will likely garner a lot of minutes early on as he will likely be the 5 by default. He must definitely improve significantly next year.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind.

He had 8 against Georgetown, but 0 against Nova.

Overall the trend is no real change.  His season average is 2.7 ppg, and his average over the past five games is 2.6 ppg.

Interestingly, the two Georgetown games were two of his best of the season -- 14/8 in the first game, and 8/3 the second time.

Georgetown has really bad and foul prone bigs.

So this seems to be the hot trend this season.  Find a player, pile on.  Repeat.

I'd suggest we post disappointing Scooper stat lines, but I'd be afraid of the commentary on my stat line.

I realize that I'm an All-American with 0.559 posts per day.  Why do I even have a scholarship??

Can I get a release and transfer to the D-III version of scoop?

I think the injury has really affected Taylor. Hopefully he is fully recovered this offseason.

This is where we miss McKay. He could have filled Taylor's role and we could have redshirtted him.

Our last big road game that we really needed and had a puncher's chance of winning was @Gtown. Guess who stepped up and willed us to victory (besides Mayo)...yes, our dear friend, Stevie. Repeat performance, please.

(lot of caveats here, but you get the picture)

Yep.  It'd be interesting to know if the staff knew all along that Steve was recovering slower than expected, or if something happened after the season began that set him back.  I suspect the latter, as he got 15 mpg the first four games, but then has been up and down (with a bunch of DNPs) since then.

He seems to play better against zone where he can find space.  He doesn't have the quickness to beat a man this year, and his rebounding is much worse than last year.  I hope the quickness and rebounding return to the flashes of brilliance we saw last year, because the kid has a high ceiling.

Not sure how you can say that his rebounding is worse. Last year, Steve had 73 rebounds in 302 minutes - 0.242 rebounds per minute. This year he has 61 in 231 minutes - 0.264 rebounds per minute (a 9.25% increase). That's also the highest rate on the team - Juan is 2nd with 0.246 reb/min, then Otule (0.238) and Davante (0.218). Hopefully Taylor can get his health back and put in a good offseason of work. He could be a real asset the next two years.
