A high-major recruit should at least be on someone's radar.  This kid is a top 500 prospect. nobody has heard of him before a few weeks ago and now every MU fan wants him.

tell me why MU should get him.

To be fair, only a few are calling him a "must-get".

And why they should get him? Because there are a lot of insufferable assholes who constantly beg Crean to recruit someone over 6'9''. Now, MU will get a commit from him, and it won't be good enough.

UConn is recruiting him, and Calhoun has been pretty good at identifying talented big men.

Well, I think the main reason why Otule hasn't been one of the more sought after bigs is because of the following fact:

http://www.houstonlynx.org/

NOTES: Chris grew 7 inches in one year. This impacted his coordination and development for a while and put him behind in learning his new post position. He is gaining skill and confidence rapidly and with continued body development, his upside as a true center should be large. He is already an effective shot blocker and is discovering what a powerful player he is capable of being.

The kid wasn't even considered a "BIG" not too long ago. He went from being a 6'3" guard to a 6'10" center in one year. That's one helluva a growth spurt. It is pretty obvious that anyone who grows 7 inches in one year is going to have some adjusting to do to their new body. I imagine adjusting to that new body while trying to play the game of basketball isn't any easier either.  So it's pretty simple to see how Otule didn't get a lot of attention until just recently.

He has potential and could become as good as Barro or better overtime. You also need more than one center. Since I assume he will need time to develope, he will not be in the pros in 2 years. He will also not be good enough to scare away a higher ranked recruit next year. While we hope he turns out to be really good, we need to have at least an adequate player with size. Most of all it sounds like he is mobile. If he just grew 7 inches, is he done grwoing?

why is Otule a must get?

Two words:  Dwight Burke

Here's IWB's article about Otule

When Dwight is pulling down his 8th double-double of the season, we'll expect your public apology.

If Dwight Burke pulls down more than one double-double this season, or even his senior season, I think I'd have a heart attack from excitement.  How many did Barro have last year, around 5?

So yeah, I'd like to bet my first-born child that doesn't exist yet that Burke doesn't get 8 double-doubles in his career.  I'd be shocked if he got one this year.  He won't get the minutes.

Otule specifically is not a must get in my eyes.  but a big that can defend and rebound is.  If Mu has targeted Otule as that guy then that is good enough for me.  Just like 4 years ago when we only had two ball handlers on the roster and they both got hurt we now see why we need to sign bigs after what happened yesterday.  Until MU can consitently sign 4 star bigs we need to sign a big every year that way we are not so dependent on a freshaman and that allows the bigs in the program 2-3 years to develop.  This is no different than when Diener got hurt...we now have a gaping hole because we have no depth at one position.  Maybe after Crean's epiphany of not getting short on guards he will now have an epiphany that the last two seasons he has been coaught short on bigs.  A Senior and a Frshman as your two interior stalwarts is a recipe for underachievement.

especially if the freshman gets hurt.

augoman
