Did anyone else see the irony in the last moment or so of regulation yesterday? I think it was a symbol for this season.

D Wilson launches a 65 foot jump shot that goes through the hole. Buzz calls time out a split second before the ball leaves Derrick's hands.

Yikes.

I can only imagine what would have happened if that shot counted. It would have been one of the great shots in Marquette history, up there with Glenn River's half-court buzzer beater against Notre Dame in the early 1980s.

Had Derrick's shot counted, everything this year would have been forgiven. Instead, we have a glass-half-empty win against the worst team in our league. In overtime!

I agree but not to be nit picky, the TO was called before the ball was inbound.  The place was pandemioum so no one heard it.  That's what Buzz was standing on the court and the ball sailed over his head.  So, it wasn't a split second before.

Buzz standing on the court doesn't mean anything. He's on it so much, someone ought to get him a uniform.

I was at the game and it was obvious that a timeout was called well before Wilson shot the ball--as there should have been. Most players were walking off the court and bench players onto the court before Wilson shot the ball. And Wilson making that shot would not have been a panacea.

I hope you're joking. You wanted Wilson heaving up a 65 footer, rather than Buzz designing a play to get a good look. That inbound play would have worked pretty well if Gardner didn't totally butcher the inbound pass to J Wilson. Your reasoning is completely skewed toward the fact that D Wilson made that prayer.

The chances that heave being a better alternative than a play drawn up on the sideline is hilarious.  65' shots go in 1% maybe less.......I think Buzz can draw up a play with better odds than that.

If MU had missed the potentially game-winning shot, and Buzz still had timeouts to burn, but didn't use them and "Let the guys do their thing" this board would have crucified him.

I agree with this point. The problem with calling that timeout is that it gives DePaul a chance to set up a defense on the inbounds. With that said, I understand Buzz calling the timeout because I don't think we currently have a player that can make a play on the fly like we needed at that point in time. As it turns out, we didn't do anything after the time out so Derrick's shot looks like a lost opportunity. In reality, it was not the shot we needed when he let it go and he was not the person we needed taking it.

The TO was called immediately after the made basket and before the inbounds.  It looked to me that the only reason Derrick even shot the ball (with 2.3 seconds left) was because he knew there was a TO and he was having a little fun.  If it had actually been live he would have likely taken at least one more dribble and shot it from around half court.

I'm not so certain.  Buzz's "special teams" are always "special".  There wasn't enough time left for the play to fall apart and someone to make something out of nothing, as with most of our buzzer beaters.  For the supposed emphasis, it's always been a weak spot.  Perhaps a special teams assistant is in order.
