The old nickname of Marquette Athletics, Golden Avalanche, reminded me of the Marquette Avalanche Ski Club and Ausblick. For those who don't know, Marquette actually owned and operated its own ski resort. Under the direction of Fr Hockhaus, Marquette bought land near Sussex and students cleared the hill of trees and built the initial infrastructure.

Marquette ran it until the '70's but sold it to private investors who made the necessary capital improvements. Part of the deal was that MU students in the Avalanche ski Club could get season passes. I learned to ski at Taos and Purgatory so Ausblick was a rather different experience but it was fun to get some snow under the Rossis.

Interesting story that is worth reading. And lends support for the Golden Avalanche/Avalanche name.
